Atlanta population grew 29% last decade

Atlanta had the eighth-highest population boom from 2000 to 2009, according to revised population figures released Friday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Big Peach added 122,099 residents -- a 29.2 percent jump -- in the nine-year period for a population of 540,922 in 2009. That growth ranked Atlanta 33rd among 19,507 places.

The nation's largest city, New York, posted the biggest population increase between 2000 and 2009, adding 383,195 residents. Its estimated 2009 population was 8.39 million.

Thirteen communities gained at least 100,000 residents in nine years:

as the vast bulk of the population loss took place on one day, 8/29/05, and neither the state nor federal government did all that much to expedite their return. :grr:

Does anyone know when the offical 2010 census numbers come out?

I thought Detroit's population loss would be higher.
