President Obama: "We gather here to remember on hallowed ground..."
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 01:22 PM by Contrary1
hal·lowed

adjective

1.made holy or sacred
2.honored as holy; venerated

So is the ground "hallowed" because the attack occurred there? Or is it because of the number of people who died? If there had been for example, one victim, would the ground still be considered "hallowed"?

Maybe it's just me. I don't like the term. And for those who do, how can they justify anything at all being built there?

1. My take is that it is considered hallowed in the venerated sense.
Many individual acts of heroism took place there. Many heroic people gave their lives in an attempt to rescue others. Many innocent people died in a tragic event.

I think that building a monument dedicated to these people and events is appropriate - but possibly a little over the top and sentimental depending on the approach.

3. Agreed. I was tremendously moved while visiting the USS Arizona memorial,
despite many who were running, laughing, and snapping happy photos. Pretty sure I would feel the same at the WTC site.

2. wouldn't the Fresh Kills DUMP be MORE "hallowed" ?
That's where the victims remains ended up.

IMO, Ground Zero is more like Unholy ground.

6. Mortal remains? It is the acts and events that are to be remembered.

12. that's right...
there's a mechanical process called "mechanical vertical pulverization"...

I won't get into it.

But let's just say that the dust that covered the city, the dust that covered the entire region WAS the mortal remains.

7. I predict we'll leave it a gaping wound for several years.
It's an effective prop to use annually to justify the sacrifice (squander) of blood, freedom & treasury.

8. Places where massacres occurred are considered hallowed ground.
I would think that it would be appropriate in this case because many of the bodies were never recovered. Many loved ones never returned, so that place is their resting place.

9. Are indian burial grounds and battle fields hallowed ground
I think most progressives are not in favor of destroying burial grounds of native Americans or other if people object
