Did you catch this in the State of the Union Address?
From the State of the Union - 2007

-snip-

One of the first steps we can take together is to add to the ranks of our military — so that the American Armed Forces are ready for all the challenges ahead. Tonight I ask the Congress to authorize an increase in the size of our active Army and Marine Corps by 92,000 in the next five years. (DRAFT???) A second task we can take on together is to design and establish a volunteer Civilian Reserve Corps. Such a corps would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing us to hire civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them. (HIRE MERCENARIES???) And it would give people across America who do not wear the uniform a chance to serve in the defining struggle of our time.

When I heard this in his address, the first thing that came to mind was the draft and the way they use Blackwater and the civilian security forces to supplement the military and do things the military cannot do overseas. He said this towards the end of his speech and one has to wonder if he didn't try to "bury" this, to save it until the end when others were bored with his words.

Why is he planning on using more such "civilian" forces overseas and at home?

1. I heard it. Seems logical to put Americans to use,
even if real jobs (have of which some would say aren't real but they're doorknobs anyway) are being offshored.

Fine by me, I dig traveling and am versed in many technical and visual skills and eager to learn.

No doubt the Bush family-owned Carlyle Group is about to expand into the "security" business here in the states. This will create an instant, taxpayer-funded supply of income for them.

The Bush family needs to stop being parasites to the American taxpayers. I realize this is all they know how to do, but the well is about to run dry.

4. Bush says lots of stuff in his speeches that he never intends to execute.
A draft will never fly under today's circumstances, and we already use mercenaries.

6. I completely missed this so if he was trying to bury it, he did.
That "do things the military cannot do overseas" thing sounds pretty bad.

8. Hiring private armies just funnels more money to the super-rich.
Just like Star Wars, Halliburton, and the rest of the war-profiteering scams.

Hiring mercenaries to fight our wars means we are headed downhill as a society.

Due in large part to the greed of the super-rich. Greed for power, greed for more gold.

America - it was nice while it lasted.
