I Received A Letter From The Dept. Of The Army Today With A Handwritten Envelope
The letter said:

Dear Me.-

I would like to take this opportunity for your very generous donation to the wounded soldiers Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle. It is so gratifying to see the out-pouring of affection for these men and women who serve our country so bravely. It is you, the American people who make this country what it is and make us all proud to be Americans.

Again, Thank you for your generosity.
Signed….

I sent phone cards and stamps. I never expected a thank you. If you wish to help out the service men and women, who need so many things such as: razors, phone cards, stamps, warm clothing in winter as well as:

“The Family Assistance Center requests that no cash or used items be donated. Among some of the more specialized needs are weightlifting gloves (for use by wheelchair patients); trousers with snaps or zips along the legs; umbrellas; and prepaid gas or grocery cards” (taken from a DU thread posted by RamboLiberal)

You can send donations to:

Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Medical Family Assistance Center
Bldg. 2, 3rd Floor, Room 3E01
6900 Georgia Ave, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20307

Hate the War.

Our men and women are brave, indeed.

Studs - one and all.

6. Disturbing.
Its great that you donated those things.
But its disturbing that these soldiers need such things.
Why aren't these things provided by the government??

Razors, warm clothing? Why don't they already have those things?

7. That Is The Question Isn't It?
And while I have been against this war from the beginning I am also horrified that these injured people have been left in dire circumstances. Where is the commitment to them by the armchair warrior who blovate about the troops? Yet these young men and women are often without the capacity to phone or write home, to the family members who can't afford to visit. Pitiful treatment. They can't give those in wheelchairs gloves? Shameful and speaks to the fakery that has surrounded every aspect of this so called war.

8. they have warm clothes
Actually The military is providing better equipment than it ever has. It is actually looking at what the soldiers buy with their own money and starting to get those things. However, technology changes fast, and the military procurement system takes a lot longer to test and roll out the latest gear. Soldiers are responsible for their own "consumables" such as toiletries and for their "pleasantries".

I view these care packages less as a necessity for gear that cannot be obtained, than as a tangible sign of love and support. In today's military, if you didn't send a thing, they'd get by without it or find a way to get it. but someone taking the time to try to think of what would be more comfortable, tasty or hard to find, is truly special.
