ILWU International "convinces" wildcat strikers they'll "try harder," ends port shutdown
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 04:48 AM by Hannah Bell
A two-day wildcat strike at the area's ports ended late Wednesday after picketing dock workers protesting a labor dispute elsewhere agreed to leave. The work stoppage began Tuesday when Port of Philadelphia longshoremen set up picket lines outside area ports to protest a labor dispute in Camden, N.J.

Local dock workers refused to cross the line, and all cargo in and out of the city ground to a halt.

The situation was resolved when the International Longshoremen's Association convinced the picketers to leave by promising to press harder for a resolution to their situation.

The ILA said it had not sanctioned the walkout and that it amounted to a wildcat action taken by individual members.

The New York Shipping Association, which manages the port, got an injunction from a federal judge in Newark on Tuesday ordering everyone back to work. Union members once again refused to cross the picket line yesterday morning, dragging the work stoppage out another day.
