Guatemala, syphilis, and American superiority
I'm sure most of us have come across the argument about the U.S. being a superior country, proven by the number of immigrants who flock here. How bad could we be if everyone wants to come here?

How about, they're coming here so they don't get deliberately infected with syphilis?

Obviously I don't mean they have that in their minds when they're coming here. For one thing, the experiments were secret.

But see what I mean? It's a rational thing to want to live in a powerful country rather than a weak one. It doesn't mean the powerful country is morally superior. It could be morally superior, but the syphilis study proves that power and moral values don't necessarily go together.

1. What was the year - 1940s? Can I blame you for attitudes others had before you were born?

We gave small pox ridden blankets to indians and started one of the earliest biological weapons program with the blankets

(...)

And now the irony…

While our good doctor, John Cutler was conducting these government-condoned “experiments” in Guatemala, the Doctor’s Trials (United States of America v. Karl Brandt, et al) were going on in the Palace of Justice in Nuremburg in front of a panel of US judges.

9. I was amazed it took place in the 1940s. I mean the USA was fighting natzis in
the 1940s. I thought they had better morals than that then...then again they ousted the Prime Ministre of Iran in the 1950 so what was I thinking.

2. Don't forget it was during (and possibly part of) the Tuskeegee experiment
when black people in the south were given dummy syphilis cures just so the investigators could study what happened to them over time as the disease progressed.

It was all the same mindset, the same horrible arrogance that people of color were inferior and suitable for experimentation.

6. Is the same mindset. Honduras, where the kidnapping, raping,
torture and murder of trade unionists, community workers and journalists by the new repressive government is overlooked entirely by our government such that Hillary Clinton can say the coup was not violent and democracy is restored.

It's interesting that one of the first acts of the coupsters was to shut down the hospital on the Atlantic coast that serves largely black people. The new government is deeply racist.

The present tense still applies.

3. Anyone who knows the US's real history doesn't see it as superior in anything
but military might. It's definitely superior in that.

5. The reason everyone wants to come here is because they don't want to be terrorized by us
Only way they have to avoid that with any certainty is to come here to live. No one knows what the next country we Shock and Awe will be. It might be their country? Very unlikely we will bomb ourselves.
