The One Nation Rally Paradox
I've learned two things about the One Nation Rally this weekend.

Actually, I've learned three things, because I didn't know there was a
One Nation Rally in D.C. this weekend. Go figure.

Beyond the existence of the rally, though... I've been apprised of two
very important facts by the conservative blogosphere.

1. The rally was very poorly attended and no where near as many people
attended the rally as attended Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor event in
August (or I am now calling it... GlennStock.)

2. Those few who attended One Nation left substantially more trash in the
park than did the attendees of GlennStock.

Here are some links.

From redblueamerica.com

From escapingmediocrity

From hotairpundit

From freerepublic

From BigGovernment

From michellemalkin

The narrative is pretty clear.

Even though a lot more people attended GlennStock... they left behind a
lot less trash than the attendees of One Nation (or as Michelle Malkin
calls it... Left-a-palooza).

Well, that's weird.

Because if GlennStock left behind so much less trash, then that
suggests that it wasn't as well attended as Left-A-Palooza.

So, did about a hundred hippies just show up in D.C. with VW buses full
of recycling and spent the afternoon throwing trash around?

If you look at the evidence that the right has been focusing on... you
don't have to be Gil Grissom from CSI to reckon that if there was so
much more trash left behind after one event than another then that
suggests the event with more trash also had higher attendance.

Of course, Gris is a dirty commie hippie who likes to play with bugs.

(Cue your favorite riff from your favorite Who song here....
kee-RANNNNNNGGGG!! Budda-THUMP.)

Because their interpretation of the evidence is that the Left are
really really messy and they really really hate the environment...

No really... check it out.

"This proves that liberals are far worse custodians of the environment than conservatives. They expect someone else to clean up their mess. Liberals are filthy polluters when it comes to litter."
RedBlueAmerica

"The commies weren’t very clean, either."
BigGovernment

"Rally signs and water bottles littered the area and trash cans spilled other refuse out to where passing pedestrians kicked it down the sidewalk.

The marchers left the Mall today in a condition that paled in comparison to the pristine scenery left behind by 8/28's “Restoring Honor” crowd."
TheBlaze

The narrative from the right is that a few hundred hippies piled into their VW vans (leaking oil, of course), piled them to the roof with recycling and garbage, and then drove them to D.C. and threw the trash everywhere. Because if so few people generated so much litter, they each attendee must have been instructed to bring a Hefty bag full of garbage with them and then they all dumped that garbage on Memorial Park on cue, right after roasting marshmallows around a roaring campfire fueled entirely with American Flags, and making S'Mores with free trade chocolate.

Of course, I suspect that the presence of so much more trash suggests the presence of so many more people.

But I'm one of those dirty commie hippies. What do I know?

See you on election day.

It Ain't Over 'Til Its Over.

2. I think it was just to pretend that there was no
agreement with the RW drivel.

8. Opposition Research
The facts presented by the RW are incompatible with each other. If there really was so much trash at the One Nation rally, the most likely reason for that is because the One Nation event had a bigger turnout than Restore Honor.

11. Exactly
When I Googled this event, I got more hits from RW sources than any where else. The MSM isn't really covering this, and the RW is presenting facts that are in particular conflict with one another.

The RW seems unaware that they are presenting evidence that the One Nation rally had a much higher turnout that Restore Honor.

6. the garbage and attendance narrative
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 07:32 PM by TheWebHead
is essentially that one side believes in personal responsibility and cleans up their own mess, bringing whatever food packaging or signs back with them to dispose later, while the left discards signs and meals provided to them by their unions and assumes a government worker performing at 1/2 the efficiency of someone from the private sector while earning double the pay will come and clean it up later. And yeah, that is an inflammatory narrative but that's what you should be prepared to argue again. It's difficult to gauge though by viewing sporadic photos where you can cherry pick evidence that backs up your preconceived opinion.

14. The RW Cherry Picked the Wrong Evidence
If there was more trash at One Nation, there were more people at One Nation.

The RW has cherry picked the photos to show small crowds at One Nation and then make the error of focusing on the only evidence that is not subject to the same cherry picking as a crowd size photo.

The trash after an event tells a more accurate tale of the attendance of the event that a photo taken at any given 15 minute interval.
