Will we EVER see pot prohibition repealed nationally in our lifetime?
It's only on page 5 or 6, but the governor of California DECRIMINALIZED marijuana the other day for his own state. What will happen nationally?

And, shouldn't all the people in California's prisons for minor marijuana crimes BE IMMEDIATELY RELEASED? They are after all political prisoners, and not dangerous in any way.

1. Prohibition was a Constitutional Amendment.
Pot laws are simply laws prohibiting its use, distribution, and production. There is an enormous difference between the two. Laws are reasonably easy to change. Constitutional Amendments are very, very hard to change.

5. And yet alcohol prohibition only was around for thirteen years..
That is an amazingly short time for such a huge swing in public opinion..

Cannabis prohibition on the other hand has been in place for nearly eighty years and shows no signs of going away at the federal level.

6. That is correct. However the percentage of the population that
was affected by the prohibition of alcohol was significantly higher than the percentage of active marijuana users. That is why some states have decriminalized marijuana, despite the federal laws. In those states, enough people are sympathetic with the desires of those who enjoy the kindly herb. In other states, tolerance is lower, and the laws remain in place. On the federal level, there is insufficient pressure on Congress to get them to decriminalize it.

The general distaste for tobacco smoking also plays into the difficulty of getting the law changed.

Personally, I'd like to see all drugs, including marijuana, that are used recreationally or for self-medication, legalized. That is not in the cards anytime soon, though. The best bet for it will be to elect an unbeatable Democratic majority in Congress. Failing that, the laws will not be changed.

Now, please don't Bogart that joint. Pass it on.

9. Actually during alcohol prohibition possession and use of alcohol was never illegal..
Prohibition made the manufacture, importation and sale of alcohol illegal, alcohol was essentially "decriminalized" during Prohibition.

You could walk around with a half pint in your back pocket and the cops would not bother you.

It was a far more benign regime than the current prohibition on other drugs.

2. No, not nationally..
The federal government would have to admit it's been lying for eighty years about cannabis, that is not going to happen.

Just as only Nixon could go to China, only a Republican would be able to repeal pothibition and they aren't going to do it.

11. Depends a lot on the state..
In my state every single State Trooper's car has a big decal of a red circle with a line through it over a pot leaf..

Pot will never be legalized here.
