Let Them Eat Beanie Babies

Am I the only one who thinks this is the most ill-timed display of ostentatious wealth ever?

Meg Whitman's record-breaking spending in the race for governor has enabled her campaign to blanket California with more TV ads and mailers than any other in state history, while also tapping new technologies to further broaden her reach.

With nine weeks left until election day, Whitman has donated $104 million of her own money to the campaign, more than any other candidate in California history and within striking distance of the national record for a non-presidential contest, the $109 million spent by businessman Michael Bloomberg to secure a third term as mayor of New York City.

Those donations have allowed her to target her campaign mailings to the smallest subsets of voters and sort out which television shows are popular among independent voters. (It turns out they are big fans of "Bones," the crime show rife with romantic tension, on which Whitman has aired ads.)

Dozens of outside consultants and a paid staff the size of some presidential campaigns run an operation that seems to be the living embodiment of Whitman's book title: "The Power of Many." After record amounts spent on television advertising, mail and ground organization, there has even been enough money left over to sponsor a youth soccer team.

It's not like we're exactly living in good times here in California. I think this is a deadly strategy. The optics are just terrible and I suspect that subliminally people find it horrific that she's spending like a drunken sailor in the middle of a terrible recession.

My one hope is that the lesson will be learned that wealthy CEOs with obscene golden parachutes are probably the last people we should be looking to for answers at a time like this. (Sadly, I'm afraid it will only be female CEOs, but that's better than nothing. After all, they're all Republicans.)

2. This should be a Brown ad. If Meg will spend 100 million of her own money to get elected,
do you really think she will hesitate to spend the taxpayers' money once in office?!?

3. My wish is that more people will wonder how that money could have helped California.
It's the ultimate vanity campaign...Whitman spending, because she can, in the name of buying power and position.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...as a Californian, I hope we're smarter than that. If Whitman were to win, California would absolutely deserve everything that followed.

4. Argument for campaign finance reform; if you can't run an efficient campaign on a tight
budget, you can't run a State efficiently on a tight budget either.

6. I like the Whitman campaign
It makes blindingly obvious what is true to a lesser extent for an alarming number of elected officials: they don't win on their merits or their proposed policies but choose instead to buy their way into office.

7. Oh, there's never a bad time for a display of ostentatious wealth
Everybody loves a winner, and Meg has millions of dollars she doesn't know what else to do with, so she has decided to run her very own personal stimulus program. Political consultants need work too, you know!

11. It's a tip-off to how she might run the state as governor?
Or do you think her personal profligacy has no bearing whatsoever on how she might treat the state treasury? Certainly her business record doesn't augur well for any particular expertise in running a state government, since one can't simply ship citizens overseas or lay off roads and schools that need maintenance.

But since her goal in spending such large amounts of her own money is to be in a position to dictate how the state will spend its money, it seems germane to the conversation.

Welcome to DU, Taipan02.

13. Well, since you asked...
...it may be HER money, but she's running for PUBLIC office.

Therefore, people are right to pay attention to her record, her behavior, and how she spends HER money, since it may be a clue as to how she will spend THEIR money should she get into office.

Okay, that clear it up for ya?

19. If Meg Whitman wanted to do something good for the people of California
she could have donated the $109 Million to food banks and other charitable organizations. It would have given her enough votes to win. This is not about helping the people, it's about keeping the money in the pockets of herself and her rich friends. To her it's an investment with a good chance of a substantial ROI.

33. Anyone's money is theirs to do with what they wish. No argument on...
Edited on Mon Oct-04-10 01:40 PM by YvonneCa
...that. But elections are about more that an individuals' own needs to win public office. Our democracy needs the politician in question (Meg, in this case) to put the needs of citizens first.

I think citizens' needs would best be served by campaign finance reform...which would give us 'regular folks' a chance to actually get into public office. Right now, the cost of running...in $$$...prevents that. THAT is not democracy.

And...just to be clear...the difference between Meg and John Kerry is how they vote. One doesn't think voting is important at all, but wants to keep control of the money in elections (Meggie)... and one votes regularly to give that control to citizens. That would be a great Democrat...John Kerry. :patriot:

23. actually... it's fantastic!
and I hope she spends TWICE as much.

Think of it as Meg's Stimulus Plan.

When Meg buys advertising time at a Los Angeles radio station, all the office/cubicle workers retain their job and the janitors retain their job to pick up the cubicles.

When Meg buys flyers, pins, bumper stickers and posters small businesses (printers and their suppliers) make enough money to keep their doors open.

etc, etc...

SPEND MEG, SPEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24. I don't think her last mouth fart has permeated through the community..
Edited on Mon Oct-04-10 01:16 PM by Stuart G
I think when word of mouth gets out about what Meg said about her maid...that line..
about "I don't know you, and you don't know me"

When that gets told from person to person within the Mexican-American community..then we will see the truth.
People talk to each other and see truth. Far more powerful than millions she has.
They will make decisions based on that truth as they see it. Some, people may stick with her.
But if I were in that community, I would change my mind after hearing this.
Let us see.________________________________________________________________

And also...who are people in the communities going to believe, Meg the Millionaire or... the fired maid?
think about that for a while

29. Well, CA needs the Whitman "stimulus" plan of $103 million
spent on developing ads, printing junk mail, and keeping many radio/TV programs in the black - AND it appears as though people currently are not listening to a word of it.

(Seriously, I think there need to be limits on what is spent by corporations and by the campaigns themselves - it really is not right that you can "buy" an election - and it wasn't when the Democrat was Corzine, who was a very good liberal Senator and a hated but actually not as bad as most governors NJ has had.
