SALEM -- The night of Dec. 14, 2008, Bruce Turnidge sat next to an FBI agent in the living room of his farmhouse in Jefferson, ranting about the need for militias and complaining about the election of an African-American president.

Hours earlier, his son, Joshua Turnidge, had been arrested in Salem in the fatal bomb explosion at a bank in Woodburn. Now, Bruce Turnidge's sprawling property near the Santiam River was crawling with Oregon State Police, FBI agents and members of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

They wanted evidence. He wanted to talk.
