1. The HCR and financial bills and the lack of a tax bill probably is holding back hiring.
How do you do cost benefit analysis when you don't have all the numbers available?

5. Never underestimate the power of the media
Unfortunately, in this day and age, the media set the agenda. Rupert Murdoch and his News Limited empire can control just about anything. His company should actually be called "Limited News".

In Australia we recently had a federal election. At the moment our economy is about the best amongst first world countries. We did not go into recession. We only have 5% unemployment. Our budget will be back in surplus in 3 years. When the global financial crisis first hit back in 2008, our government immediately introduced stimulus programs. Nearly everybody of working age received a cheque for about $1000. Billions was poured into building school halls right across the country, creating employment everywhere there are schools. Anybody who wanted insulation installed in their ceilings could have it for free.

One would think that a government that achieved all this would win an election in a landslide. Unfortunately Murdoch controls a fair chunk of the media here. He ran a propaganda campaign that would have done Goebbels proud. The result of the election was a draw, and government was decided by independents. Lucky for us they chose to support the Labor Party. We currently have a minority government and we'll be lucky if it runs full term.
