Tonight (10-8), my DU friends, is my last in the lookout for the 2010 fire season. (DIAL-UP WARNING)
It is bittersweet. I'm ready to head back to the east coast, but I love this lookout. Not to worry: I signed on for another season (2011)!

Early this morning at the lookout tower. Where's Nick?

Some old fart in my lookout tower. BTW: The whistle is for the cougars.

Adieu, summer place .. adieu.

21. Yep. Drive the entire 3000+ miles.
I'll post my route soon, but it will approximate Bend to Reno and US-50 east to a drop-down on US-191 to Moab. Then south to the Devil's Highway (US-666), connecting to I-40. I-40 to Amarillo, then off the interstates on US-287/82 to Wichita Falls and Sherman and Texarkana. Down to I-20 to Vicksburg and east from there. Probably. Maybe. Depends on the weather.

44. Take care on the way home...
enjoyed your weather notices...we got the storms you got a couple of days later. The storms now starting to crank up will come straight out of the arctic, up and over the Cascades bringing in below freezing temps. Sometimes as low as -22F.

Enjoy returning to civilization and we'll look for your stories and pics starting in late spring next year.

46. "The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America"
http://www.amazon.com/Big-Burn-Teddy-Roosevelt-America/dp/0547394608/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1286653414&sr=1-1

DemoTex, It's highly likely that you're already familiar with the above book, but if not, check it out. If you have a Kindle with you (or the Kindle app installed in your computer or smartphone) you get started on it right now. I myself have that book in Audible.com format, and I just finished listening to it yesterday.

And if you have a fire-fighting implement called a "Pulaski" close at hand, you can read about the fire-fighter hero after whom it's named.

Great swap! Thanks again, Dave.

BTW: I am on my way home. I left Bend this morning (Sunday). I saw a Golden Eagle along Oregon-31 near Paisley, a Bald Eagle flew right in front of my truck near Goose Lake at the Oregon/California line, and a big Cougar crossed US-395 in front of me in the desert just south of Alturus, California!
