please DO NOT use other people's art and pix without permission!!!
hello,

an individual on DU is using an image from my website without permission. I have asked that person to stop doing that.

It has appeared on many DU pages and counts as bandwidth from my site and is charged by my webhost.

Please do not use other people's images without permission (theirs or mine). Such use is not free for the people
who create and design images and post them on our own websites.

Thank you very much,

Msongs

For the time being, change your image to a message about not using images without permission. That will make the referencing websites look silly.

4. a slight enhancement of your idea
Rename the image that is being used inappropriately. Change the page where it appears in MSONG's site so the correct image appears, but under the new name. Replace the image that is being hijacked with the "do not use my stuff" message. That way, MSONG's site stays intact, and the offendor gets the message loud and clear.

15. No, Msongs did right
As a frequent offender, I find it very helpful to get these reminders. It has nothing to do with DU admin, and everything to do with lazy but well-meaning people like me.

I forget, lol. Feel dirty even logging into that forum anymore.

Much more satisfying to take down a bandwidth thief with a tweaked .jpg. Some people I prefer not to engage with.

9. Several options for you
I don't know the situation but the post you refer to may be too old to edit. If the image is being used over and over deliberately, that's another, uglier matter.

Here are some suggestions:

Rename the image so the offending poster's hotlink results in a red x error.

Add the URL of your site onto the image and consider it free advertising.

Use .htaccess to block hotlinking completely.

14. htaccess
Is a simple text file that you upload to your host. it can block hotlinkers, hitbotters and other freeloaders. That may be what your host does, just in a simpler user interface.

28. htaccess does not do what you think it does
its for web spiders, and if often ignored, even by them. It does nothing for intentional deep linking.

36. I disagree
Its just a text file in a directory. The spider or browser has to support it, and many don't.

If you think it does, please explain how you think it works.

37. All files and programs can be opened by a text editor
What matters is the file extension. :)

Here is a portion of a definition from TechTarget:

".htaccess was introduced as a directory-level, user authentication method along with the original programs developed for retrieving Web pages over the Internet, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol daemon. When users type in a Uniform Resource Locator (the name of a Web site they want to go to), the URL begins with "http://". This command is recognized by the underlying Web server software program, HTTPd (for HyperText Transfer Protocol daemon). (A daemon is a program that sits waiting for requests for other programs.)

The main access control file used by HTTPd is the global access configuration file, which often resides at the root directory of the HTTPd server. .htaccess files are additional, directory-level access control files used by HTTPd.

When the HTTPd server receives a user's request for a document, it looks in the document's own directory, as well as higher up in the chain of directories for these types of access control files. If it finds .htaccess, it will look there to see whether or not the user is allowed to access the file. Based on the information it finds, it may ask the user for his or her user name and password first, before sending the requested document..."

http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,290660,sid7_gci214573,00.html

Since a browser calls up pages via HTTP/URL protocols, I would imagine the server tells the browser not to open a file that is blocked via .htaccess.

:)

Is there a work around? Sure. Does the casual average hotlinker take the time to implement a workaround? Probably not.

29. My son named him
8 years ago I rescued two feral kittens and wanted to name them Mulder and Scully but Mulder didn't really fit this little guy - he looked more like an alien than a David Duchovney. My son thought Gilbey was a better name. Turns our he named him after some rock musician. Gilbey the rock star cat.

34. Cry me a river. An "individual" here is using a customized avatar that I designed for myself.
Edited on Mon May-21-07 02:25 AM by dicksteele
(2nd edit- that "cry me a river" is a real HARSH ways of saying that
I understand what you mean- just wanted to say that I didn't mean to diss you
with that phrase, but was rather attempting to sympathize while simultaneously
ranting about something that REALLY pisses me off! I'm not so good with the words
when i'm calm, and I'm not even close to calm when this subject is concerned.
I apologize if I gave any offense to the Author of this thread
)

Sure, he had brains enough to NOT link directly from my PhotoBucket acount....
But not the merest SHRED of what we used to call "integrity".

I spent the time to conceive and execute a custom avatar last year, just
for myself. And 2 weeks later some talentless asswipe had cut-n-pasted
it and was using it as his avatar.

That was well over a year ago. He's still using it.

My "donor star" expired a few months ago, and my REPLACEMENT avatar
disappeared with it. It seems that CUSTOM avatars are only available
to "donors".

Somehow, I just don't quite feel so terribly motivated to send $$$ to DU
to regain that exclusive "personal avatar" privilege this year as i have
in years previous.. KnowhutImean?

And, just to get back "on topic".....I edited a photo awhile back
for a DUer who wanted to use it as a sig here at DU.

SEVERAL of us did, at his specific request, because
he started a "can someone please edit this pic for me" thread.
He chose my version from among several suitably-edited responses.

When I dared mention (several months later) that he was still using
-MY- PhotoBucket bandwidth for his sig pic, he got huffy, called me a bully,
and dropped the sig entirely. Even though I PM'd him with an offer to help
walk him through the entire three-minute process of setting up his own FREE
PhotoBucket account....NoNoNo I was a "bully", and he never responded.

Even though I'm a fricking ARTIST, and I would have charged any stranger 200 bucks for
the time and TALENT I put into editing that sigpic for a fellow DUer....
(30 minutes of staring/thinking, 10 minutes using my $700 Software,
5 mins uploading/posting..and a LIFETIME of experience....yeah, i call that
an "hour" and i charge strangers $200 for it for a one-time, one-hour job
any day of the week. I do it FREE for "fellow DUers"....or at least i used to.)

No, that 200 bucks of free work means nothing compared to what a HORRIBLE person i am
for mentioning that he was burning my bandwidth. Apparently, I wasn't "polite"
enough when I waited 3 fucking months to mention that he was a goddamn thief.
Oooh, my bad.

NOT.

FUCK art thieves- fuck them in the heart, in all their many forms.
May they live forever in a world of their own design.

Sincerely.

Richard Steele

(Edited for punctuation; I left the improper capitalization as it was
originally typed because I felt it was consistent with the mood of the piece.)
