The Today Show asks: "Is Rush Limbaugh getting a pass?"
Edited on Mon May-21-07 09:46 AM by Breeze54
The Today Show did a segment about Rush Limbaugh trashing Barack Obama in an Imus kind of way!

They were asking if the nation was giving him a pass because of his 'Magic Negro' 'parody' about Obama.

But all I can find in reference to the segment is a video of 'Rat Rush' doing his so called 'parody'.

Click the link below to view Rush Limpballs trashing Obama.

I know. I know. The below article is from Newsbusters but they're the only one's mentioning it.

'Today' Seeks to Stir 'Magic Negro' Trouble for Rush

http://newsbusters.org/node/12895

Posted by Mark Finkelstein on May 21, 2007 - 09:09.

Trying to stir up trouble for Rush Limbaugh this morning over his "Magic Negro" parody about Barack Obama, "Today" relied on misleading comments from a left-wing outfit without bothering to mention its highly-partisan orientation.

NBC's Michael Okwu narrated the segment, aired during the second half-hour of this morning's show. He began by harkening back to Don Imus's MSNBC career-ending comments about the Rutger's women's basketball team. Fretted Okwu: "which leads some to wonder: has Limbaugh been getting a free pass?"

View video here.

To whom did Okwu turn to support his theory that "some" wonder about Rush getting away with things? None other than Paul Waldman, senior fellow at Media Matters , who was pleased to opine: "this is basically the radio equivalent of a blackface minstrel show. I mean going back to Amos 'n Andy and all of those kind of racist shows of the past." While Waldman's MM affiliation was noted, NBC failed to inform viewers that MM describes itself as a "progressive" organization whose target is "conservative misinformation."
Later came a clip of Michael Harrison, publisher of "Talkers" magazine: "it's insulting, it's in bad taste, but it's legitimate political satire."

Okwu: Limbaugh declined an interview but in his broadcasts suggests the song is simply a parody, based on a newspaper column written about Obama by a journalist David Ehrenstein.

Ehrenstein: The magic Negro is chiefly a term used in talking about films in which you would have black characters suddenly coming out of nowhere, and come to the rescue of white characters."

Cut to a clip of "The Legend of Bagger Vance," in which Will Smith emerges out of the darkness to do just that, helping a struggling white golfer recapture his game.
Then it was back to Waldman. Okwu let us know the MM man thinks "Limbaugh has no excuse." Said Waldman: "he's trying to get himself off the hook by saying, oh look, it's somebody else who did it, it's not really me.'"

Lamented Okwu: "Media watchdogs say there's no hue and cry to stop Limbaugh, because he speaks to a niche audience who either expects this or is willing to let him slide, and his target in this case is a public figure, a presidential candidate, not a college women's basketball team. Funny, or bad taste? Legitimate political satire, or something darker?"

Is it time or past time to get 'Rush the Drug Crazed DJ' off the air???

3. You only answered one question though.
;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who are Rush's advertisers?? I think they should be bombarded with e-mails
just like Imus' advertisers were bombarded with threats to boycott!
It worked for Imus and Coulter! Why not Rush?? :shrug:
I hate him more than the other two, if that's possible.
2. It's the target that killed Imus ...
Imus' big mistake was using a group of student athletes as the target of his bile. The other mistake was being part of one of the big media empire that actively markets to black viewers.
Rush Limbaugh is picking on a presidential candidate, not a student athlete. He's "fair game" so to say for his "type" of radio. Limbaugh also does not work for a company that markets to blacks. Limbaugh appeals to white knuckledraggers who could care less about the type of demeaning ethnic jokes he makes.
In order to get to Limbaugh, you would have to threaten boycotts against individual stations that broadcast Limbaugh and his sponsors. I'm not sure that this would be too effective since these stations really don't market to minorities and progressives in the first place. In general, its reactionaries and loudmouths who dominate the "talk radio" audience. Progressives listen to NPR. Air America is struggling, its intended audience apparently listens to their iPod instead.
8. Who he appeals to is well known I think but the advertisers sell to everyone!
I'm sure his advertisers aren't just marketing to 'white knuckledraggers'! I doubt it!!
They're probably the top listeners though. I'll bet a lot of America buys the same products!
I would have to be a member of Rushs' website to get in and see who is advertising with him.
And I'm not willing to do that. Any other ways to find out?
Using the word 'negro' in regards to any person, not just directed at a presidential candidate, is not acceptable in my book!
Being a presidential candidate and therefore a 'target'; does NOT make that kind of BS drival okay!!!
That's a load of crap.
30. Free speech ...
As lousy as it seems there is such a thing as free speech. Do I approve of what Rush Limbaugh says ??? No I do not. It was not any "thought police" that brought Imus down. It was his advertisers and his broadcast network. Feel free to launch a campaign against Limbaugh. I think you'll find that he pretty insulated against the outrage of liberals and progressives.
11. I think your take on this is correct. The young women that Imus
insulted had not put themselves in the public eye as individuals. The backlash threatened the sale of his products sponsors, so he had to go. It was more about the money his advertisers could lose that about the actual comments he made.
4. A poor comparison to Imus. With all the nasty stuff Rush has done, they
could have something more damning than this mildly offensive political humor.
17. I live in a part of the country where all most all AM talk radio is
conservative. Idaho is the most 'Republican' state in the nation. We could have $5.00 a gallon gas and conservatives would smile and as if we could pay some more. It might make the rich ...richer and that is swell for the economy. Cut their taxes, too. Get rid of that one million in the State budget that goes for early childhood education....it will be better spent on a new prison building, where young men can properly be punished for being poor and uneducated. (How COULD they turn to 'Crack'?) Anyhooo both our talk AM stations in Boise have utter BS chatter from, Rush, Dr Laura, O'Liely, Hannity, and Savage. I listen to Coast to Coast, in my sleep so I am occasionally awakened by BlabberMouth Windbag Rush. Sometimes I listen a minute. It is generally so insulting to intelligence that the radio gets snapped off until, Dr Laura comes on at 1:00 and why I subject myself to that only a Masochist will ever know. Oh, I know, now...it just hit me...after everyday of her proud mother moments of her deployed American Paratrooper Manly Man, hair on his balls, "Whooo Hawww" son...I am pleased to hear the kid is a hardened violent pervert who has pictures of stick figures depicting torture of children, a young son, forced to perform oral sex on HIS captor in front of his crying pleading mother. Laura, you must be so proud. AS proud as, Rush, with his bottle of mislabeled Viagra, coming back into the country, from a place where child sex is commonplace. Maybe that's where Derick, got his pictures. Rant over.
21. Yes!! I was surprised that NBC carried this story!
I mean, Rush spewed this crap in March, so why'd it take them so long?
I guess, better late than never but I think Rush should be called on it.
I barely remember hearing anything about this in March.
I'm sure someone on DU probably posted about it though. ;)
22. Let The Marketplace Take Him Off The Air
...or minimalize him. It's starting to happen.
The other day someone posted about Dr. Laura the Unloved. I almost forgot about that whine factory...she's no longer on a major station in my area and her 15 minutes long passed. Also, she became box office poison...the same thing Rushbo is becoming.
The other day Whorie Kurtz attempted to talk about what's going on in broadcasting...screwing around with the Anthony and Opie mess and totally missing the undercurrent that's starting to affect talk radio. Call it the Imus affect and it's more akin to the Janet Jackson "malfunction" than anything else. It woke up advertisers and agencies to the bile that's being pumped on the radio and what they're advertising dollars are buying.
Add to this the shitty economy that is drying up advertising dollars...the companies are more selective where they're spending and radio, being at the bottom of the media food chain now, is barely getting table scraps. The major corporations like Cheap Channel are having major financial troubles (most of their own making) that are making each dollar earned precious. Thus all are taking a closer look at their liabilities...and there's Rush!
For many years, he was a luxuary stations could afford. He was cheap programming and drew an audience that were easy sells...many are now gone or no longer are spending money on radio...the red ink is flowing and changes are about to happen. Not a good time for Rushbo and the EIB.
For years, hate and shock radio were cheap and easy audience and attention grabbers. It used to attract listeners as things got more outrageous...until it hit the silly mode...and that's where we are now.
In many ways, I hope Rushbo sticks around a little longer. He helped us win the Senate in '06 and he's sure to make more "headlines" in the next 18 months...and not ones the Repugnican party will like. He's already claiming to be the "kingmaker"...just stay tuned. The ultimate Rushbo implosion is on the way.
wtf?? :crazy: By one Senator??
With that kind of help, who needs enemies? Oh wait...he is one! :P
I'd rather have had a much wider margin of comfort and control in the Senate!
I hope you're right that his advertising dollars are dwindling! He needs to go!!
25. He Helped McCaskill Win Missouri
Despite our learning that Rove had the DOJ trying to suppress voters in the final days, it was Rushbo's attack on Michael J. Fox that turned what was a close race with Talent slightly ahead to a 5 point McCaskill win. Without this seat the Senate would be a different place today. I'm a lot more comfortable with a Majority Leader Reid setting the agenda than Prune-Faced McConnell. Rush can be thanked for that.
Few expected the Democrats to come close to retaking the Senate...and, yes, the job now is to widen that margin and embolden the existing Progressives and Liberals to lead the agenda. That's why I am focused on the local side of the elections and not the Presidential beauty pagent. We need super majorities in both Houses next year and let the Repugnican party continue to implode and divide.
Cheers...
