Schauer, Walberg exchange barbs in 7th District U.S. House debate

Charlotte — Candidates for one of the most competitive House races in the country exchanged heated jabs in their first "no rules" debate over issues ranging from flag burning to the Enbridge oil spill Wednesday night, making their case for the 7th Congressional District seat.

The race is a rematch between U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, and former U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, a Republican from Tipton. Walberg held the seat for one term before Schauer defeated him in a close contest in 2008.

The no-rules format allowed the candidates to interrupt each other with little interference from the moderator. The attacks started early and continued throughout the hour-long showdown televised live.

"Why have you supported spending policies that have broken the bank?" Walberg asked Schauer.

Schauer poked at Walberg: "Are you afraid to get tough on China? Whose side are you on?"
