Remember when "amnesty" was a good word?
I do.

Not to sound cheesy, but it sort of carried it's own inner light around with it. The word "amnesty" was like the word "hope" or "grace" or "forgiveness" or "divine" or "emancipation" or "glory" or "justice."

I've been seeing a lot of seedy politicians spitting the word "amnesty" out of the corner of their mouths recently, as if it was some four letter curse word. They've done the same with the words "peace" and "equality" and "diversity."

2. It still does. Of course, I don't hate those of Mexican descent. YMMV, apparentlly.

3. Remember when immigration laws were enforced?
Why can't the illegals enter the country through legal channels instead of violating our laws? Why why, why???????????

4. There was a time when there were no immigration restrictions for Mexicans.
People have ALWAYS crossed the border to look for work.

5. I remember lots of things.
I remember that modern draconian, poorly designed immigration laws date back to 1924, when racist hysteria gripped the country.

Before that if you wanted to come into the country you were welcome too.

I remember when the U.S. shipped thousands of U.S. citizens to Mexico because they were of Mexican descent.

I remember when Hitler used minorities as scapegoats to dupe a lot of stupid people into supporting him.

I remember that, logically, if we gave immigrants amnesty, then you wouldn't be illegal any more, and your stated problem would be solved.

6. Because our current immigration policy doesn't reflect reality.
We have an economy where capital and goods flow across international borders. It is asinine to think people won't flow, too. We need an immigration policy that recognizes these realities.

The case of Mexico and the US is unique. It is the longest border in the world where the Third World bumps up against the First World. That sucking sound you hear? It's not jobs flowing south. It's people flowing north to where economic opportunity is. We need to regularize those flows, not beat our heads against the wall in vain efforts to prohibit them.

By the way, what's an "illegal." The use of dehumanizing language like this is not helpful.
