NBC: Dem source says Gonzo "no confidence" vote "unlikely"

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/05/21/198493.aspx

<snip>

While there was much discussion over the weekend about Sen. Chuck Schumer's (D) proposal of a "no confidence" vote this week on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, it's "unlikely" to happen, according to a senior Democratic aide. On paper, having such a vote would appear to be a no-brainer for Democrats because it would likely get some Republican support. But in the Senate, there's no such thing as taking a clean shot on an issue. If a vote did come to the floor, GOP leaders have procedural tools to either stop it or require a vote on on another resolution that would be problematic for Democrats to support. ("How about a vote on if the war is lost," a Republican aide suggested.)

5. Link to article:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top Republican on the Senate committee investigating Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he believes Gonzales could resign before a no-confidence vote sought this week by Senate Democrats.

In a further sign of his eroding support within the GOP, Gonzales failed to draw a public statement of support from Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. Asked whether Gonzales effectively can lead the Justice Department, McConnell said "that's for the president to decide." The senator suggested there may be several resolutions introduced to dilute a no-confidence vote.

"In the Senate, nobody gets a clear shot," said McConnell, R-Ky.

2. So How Come The Dems Didn't Use All These Procedural Tools....
when the Repugs were in control of Congress?

Why is it that the Repugs can do these procedural work arounds and stalls. Weren't they in force when the Dems were the minority?

7. The Dems are allowing the minority to have a voice
which is why the GOPers are able to spit in Dems faces every time Dems turn around.

Forget the meme that the Dems are bringing knives to a GOPer shoot 'em up. Dems are not bringing knives, they are bringing daisies.

22. Because they're too timid and cowardly to be assertive
And as is becoming apparent, the "leadership" hasn't changed its stripes much now that it's in the majority. Lots of bark (or whining)- but no bite.

3. What is "a senior Democratic aide" doing talking this crap to NBC?
For whom does this "senior Democratic aide" work and is this a deliberate torpedo being launched against Schumer's plan?

let's keep an eye on it and see if MSNBC will allow the posts to go through. Their article should be retracted.

15. Some Rope-A-Dope???
Prune-Face McConnell threatened some hocus pocus manuever the other day...this smells like a feint. The House has already introduced a resolution and this will get plenty of notice...and put further pressure on Repugnican Senators...then at Schummer or Reid's chosing they can bring a joint House-Senate resolution to the floor and force McConnell's hand.

Remember, many here thought there'd never be a Senate vote on the Feingold ammendment.

I would imagine there's at least 55 votes to pass this thing...and 60 is not too big of a push. Reid's a good card player and may already have the 60 and waiting to see what play McConnell does.
