Democrats abandon House progressives
As the election nears, the party throws its weight behind unreliable centrists
By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS, Associated Press

*

Grasping to keep control of Congress, Democratic leaders are turning their backs on some of their staunchest supporters in the House and propping up stronger candidates who have routinely defied them on health care, climate change and other major issues.

Raw politics -- the drive to win a House-majority 218 seats, no matter how -- is increasingly trumping policy and loyalty in these decisions, as Democrats shift money and attention in the closing days of the campaign toward races they can win and pull back from those seemingly lost.

The Democrats are shelling out $40 million in 59 congressional districts in the last three weeks of the campaign for TV advertising. Republicans, boosted by well-funded outside groups, are working to expand the political battleground by pouring money into 82 races next week alone.

<snip>

Democratic strategists acknowledge the tough decisions are based on harsh reality: If the party loses the House, all of its plans and Obama's would face major GOP roadblocks, so right now it's about scoring as many wins around the country as possible -- whether that benefits friends or foes of core party principles.

I honestly would like to see a discussion about this without rancor and ad hominem attacks. Any takers? As another poster asked elsewhere, remember Lamont vs. Lieberman??

1. As a lifelong Dem activist, it's really depressing to see such support for...
...conservadems - I'd rather have a strong coalition of principled Dems than a majority that's as worthless as this one.

2. Yep
so sad the principled Dems just aren't getting voted in...the march to the right continues, corporatism continues to gain...

3. I think principled Dems would win if Dem leaders would clarify the message...
... and get behind them - it's hard for some voters to tell how Dems are different from Repukes when they see Obama and Clinton campaigning for Blanche Lincoln.

Problem is, I'm not so sure our leaders are principled Dems.

4. Don't believe anything you read in the AP
AP seems to be putting out more and more hit pieces against Democratic leaders. They are functioning as a tool of the RepubliCONS.

Hidden in the body is this bit:

"Party leaders deny they're abandoning any Democrats at this critical stage in the campaign and argue they're maintaining the flexibility to help all of their candidates."

6. I look at all msm articles with a very critical eye...
but I know Arcuri in the district next to mine, is very conservative and getting strong support...which is counter to the dem's platform, I think...

7. "Democratic leaders are turning their backs on some of their staunchest supporters"
And they wonder why they are perennially on the verge of breaking up as a party.

11. I still think they're throwing it on purpose -
it's a lot easier to push through right-wing legislation when you don't have majority of democrats.

Now they'll mess with social security (and you know that was the plan all along - Obama said "we need to have a conversation about social security" in his first State of the Union address" and no one talked about that either).
