new Spanish-language ad encourages Nevada Latinos not to vote to punish Dems over immigration reform
Maker Of Ad Telling Latinos Not To Vote Has Long History In GOP (VIDEO)
Brian Beutler | October 19, 2010, 1:20PM25

The man behind a new Spanish-language ad, encouraging Nevada Latinos not to vote is a veteran of Republican politics and now an advocate for what most would consider conservative, business-friendly immigration policy.

In an interview with TPM, Robert de Posada, founder of Latinos for Reform, said he's become equally disgruntled with both parties. His current goal, though, is to punish Democrats for failing to deliver on a promise to pass comprehensive immigration reform. And his CV includes a long list of affiliations with conservative immigration reform groups.

2. "Posada [...] said he's become equally disgruntled with both parties"
What a load of bullcrap.

From the Las Vegas Sun article:

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/oct/18/race-baiting-ads-have-worked-past/

On Monday, a group called “Latinos for Reform” — an independent political organization that is not subject to disclosure rules — joined the electoral fray, with two commercials urging Hispanics to sit out the election.

The group made a name for itself during the 2008 election cycle campaigning against Obama, on the grounds that he favored blacks over Hispanics.

The leader of that group, Robert Deposada, a conservative pundit on Spanish-language Univision who once ran President George W. Bush’s commission to advance privatization of Social Security, said Hispanics should boycott the polls because Obama has not yet delivered on his campaign promise to tackle immigration reform.

(emphasis mine)

There will be a backlash, count on it. In fact it has already started, as our Hispanic candidate for governor (Republican), Brian Sandoval, has called for the ad to be taken down:

http://www.lasvegassun.com/blogs/nevada-territory/2010/oct/19/sandoval-take-down-hispanic-voter-suppression-ad/

Sandoval: Take down Hispanic voter suppression ad

Republican candidate for governor Brian Sandoval blasted an ad that tells Hispanic voters to stay home.

Sandoval, looking to become the state's first Hispanic governor, issued a statement calling for the ad to be taken down.

Latinos for Reform, headed by a conservative activist, is airing the Spanish-language ad telling voters to register their unhappiness with Democrats' inaction on immigration reform by not voting.

Sandoval, in a statement, called the ad outrageous.

3. Let the guy waste his money. And let me ask this question:
Have you *EVER* made a voting decision based on what a commercial tells you to do? The idea that someone's ad is going to influence your decision whether or not to vote is preposterous. At worst it will provide some small level of aid in rationalization to those who would otherwise have not voted for whatever reason. At best it will piss off Hispanic voters and get them to the polls, where they will proceed to vote for whoever they were going to vote for in the first place without regard to the stupid ad.

4. Creating wedges and division has worked for Republicans, so
now Latino's the target?

5. They have been for a long time. Here in Phoenix, there are too few voting booths,
poor staffing at the polls, and even some false disturbances created to actaully get the police called out at precincts with high Latino turnout.
