Canadians stop "Fox News" type channel from starting
http://www.care2.com/causes/politics/blog/fox-news-north-will-not-be-funded-by-cable-fees/

Fox News North" chances of becoming a reality are looking slim after a bid for forced access to cable fees was dropped -- thanks in large part to an out pour of complaints, letters and petitions throughout Canada and the United States.

Just a few months ago, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper started pushing Fox News North, or Sun TV News -- similar to the kind of hate-filled media Fox News displays -- to be funded with money from Canadian citizens' cable TV fees. Canadians would most likely not be interested enough in the channel to fund the programming, which is the primary reason Sun TV sought such funding in the first place. Now that the network is feeling the pressure of the several thousand opponents, this dropped bid could ultimately end their attempt to put Fox News on Canadian airwaves.

In just two months, the Care2 petition to keep hate media out of Canada gathered more than 8,500 signatures -- thank you to all who signed. Avaaz.org also set up a campaign that played a major role in stomping out the use of cable fees for funding Fox News North.

Congratulations to all who took a stand against Fox News North, you're actions are not going unnoticed!

That's how it's done! :headbang:

7. Umm, we have free speech here as well, Fox News North wanted to force Canadians to pay...
for their network whether we wanted it or not. They didn't get what they wanted. They are still free to put their network on cable via subscriptions and Canadians who want it can subscribe. The problem with that is they KNOW Canadians don't want it so won't subscribe.

Not a free speech issue at all.

9. Pardon?
Did you miss the bit where they were looking for govt. subsidies because interest wouldn't be high enough for them to fund it themselves?

And the bit where that was halted by Canadian citizens voicing their opinions against it?

I'm hoping that I just completely misunderstood your post.

10. you raise a good point.
Check out this story about Alex Hundert, a Canadian who has been banned from speaking.

Canadian Court Bans G-20 Defendant from Speaking

Alex Hundert's G20 nightmare began on June 26 when Toronto Police raided his home at 4 a.m., arresting he and his partner Leah Henderson at gunpoint. One month later they were released from prison on $100,000 bail each, with 20 stringent conditions, including conditional house arrest, non-associations with some of their best friends, and a ban on posting to the internet and attending or planning any public demonstrations. Upon his release, Hundert gave a handful of interviews to the media, and the police tried to return him to prison for breaking his 'no demonstration' condition. A judge ruled in September that speaking to the media was protected and didn't break the condition. Four days later Hundert was arrested again immediately after participating as an invited speaker on a university panel. This time, after spending an additional four weeks in prison, a judge sided with the police that Hundert did break the 'no demonstration' condition. Hundert's bail was amended to include a total ban on voicing any political view, specifically mentioning that he not speak with the media.

18. Read past the headline, and you'll know it's not a free speech issue...
...Canadians just prevented the government from mandating that anyone who pays cable fees must support Sun TV News.

By the way, I don't know if Americans know this, but actual Fox News does air in Canada - you just have to sign up and pay for it, like HBO or whatever. I have no objection to Sun TV News setting up that type of channel, but they probably can't afford to, due to lack of interest on the part of the public.

20. I so hope you are right and their bid has ended. But since the neocon newspaper
"The National Post" hasn't run a profit in 15 years and still keeps going, I'm not optimistic that these nutbars will give up on a news channel.

Their beloved conservative party members are stuck at 35% in the polls and they need to do something to budge the poll numbers. They can't go anymore to the left as that would make these neocons downright liberal. So they have to move the Canadian populace to the right to have a chance at a majority (and all the social engineering that would follow).

I'm sure if nuclear war happened the neocons would survive along with the cockroaches.

25. Really? The Post STILL hasn't made a profit?
I used to be a subscriber to FRANK magazine and they predicted the Post would fold within a year becuase of their "no-profit" status.

I wonder who's bankrolling them?

28. The rest of the world is learning from the USA.
Fox Noise is obviously propaganda. High Fructose Corn Syrup is NOT like sugar, the body processes it differently; GMO Frankenfoods are typically* unhealthy, and not tested for long-term effects; the Earth is indeed experiencing massive climate change; massive corporations do not "self police" for any interests but their financial ones.

Many other countries have realized our mistakes, driven by political cronyism and corporate rule, and deny GMOs, HFCS (Even now that it's "corn sugar") etc, etc.

*There may be a "healthy" frankenfood that I haven't heard of. I just didn't want to give a wacko something to pick up on to distort the debate.
