Huckabee calls on Congress to cut NPR funding
(CNN) – In the wake of NPR's firing of contributor Juan Williams over comments about Muslims, Mike Huckabee is calling on the next Congress to cut the radio network's funding when it convenes next year.

"NPR has discredited itself as a forum for free speech and a protection of the First Amendment rights of all and has solidified itself as the purveyor of politically correct pabulum and protector of views that lean left," Huckabee said in a statement provided to CNN.

Williams told Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on Monday that he gets "worried" and "nervous" on flights when he sees people wearing "Muslim garb." NPR terminated Williams' contract on Wednesday evening.

Huckabee said he "will no longer accept interview requests from NPR as long as they are going to practice a form of censorship, and since NPR is funded with public funds, it is a form of censorship."

for the GOP for decades.

4. I agree with cutting NPR. I have no idea what the purpose of the channel is
It's not news, and it's not entertainment. I have no idea what the mission of NPR is, but the current product is trash.

29. NPR appears to be the last real journalism in America.
I don't always listen because of multiple options, but I am glad it is there...

And if you haven't listened to Car Talk lately, I would recommend it. Prairie Home Companion? Not so much.

in our media. Who can say the word fuck without being bleeped?

He's being pretty selective with his outrage, but then that's nothing new.

NPR should be fully government supported, and there should be an equivalent NPTV. I hate to see them firing Juan "Colmes" Williams for his stupid comment. It discredits them.

Williams should have apologized for the comment. That would have helped defuse the stereotype. Both the government and the people need to respect the constitution. Obnoxious speech has to be given wide latitude.

15. Umm, he's censoring NPR further by refusing interview requests. What hypocrisy.
And he's hosting a show on a censorious network that considers itself a fair and balanced news network! What an idiot!

Regarding public funds, I wonder how many sane people (especially Muslims) are willing to contribute to Juan Williams's paycheck any longer.

17. Where was he when Rick Sanchez was fired?
Sanchez's remarks were far milder than Williams', but because they were not directed at Muslims Huckabee had no problem with his firing.

22. ...you mean you don't think they were?
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 01:00 PM by Donald Ian Rankin
"Yeah, very powerless people. He's such a minority. I mean, you know, please. What—are you kidding? I'm telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority?"

"Political correctness can lead to some kind of paralysis where you don't address reality. I mean, look Bill , I'm not a bigot, you know the kind of books I've written on the civil rights movement in this country, but when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Are you saying that you *don't* think that the latter is significantly more bigotted than the former?

24. Interesting how you leave out most of what Sanchez says
Like when he calls Jon Stewart a "bigot".

Dominick: What group is he bigoted towards?
Sanchez: Everybody else who’s not like him. Look at his show, I mean, what does he surround himself with?

What is he talking about here? In what sense can Jon Stewart be called a bigot?

34. He may well be accusing Stewart of discriminating in favour of Jews.
Although I don't think that's a total certainty.

I don't know whether there's any evidence to support that (if that was what he meant) or not - I suspect not - but, whether there is or not, it's an attack on a specific individual, rather than all followers of a religion, and what he's accusing Stewart of is mild discrimination, not blowing up aircraft - not even in the same league as Williams.

18. NPR doesn't get direct federal funding
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting receives government funding and awards grants to member stations. Member stations purchase programs from NPR.PBS, and other public broadcasting networks. CPB doesn't directly fund NPR.

letting their kids near ministers. Particularly, Baptist ministers.

Wonder what he'd be demanding from Congress then.

Seems like they're always doing fund drives, and it sure sounds like public support and corporate underwriting is what's keeping them afloat.
