Reynolds' racial remarks stun forum audience

CHAMPAIGN – The Republican candidate for state Senate in the 52nd District said Wednesday night that black men "find it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than do education."

Al Reynolds, 65, of Danville made the remarks at a candidate forum at the Champaign City Building. The forum was co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Champaign County NAACP.

Reynolds' comments came in response to a question about increasing the number of black and Latino students at the University of Illinois.

"I've been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are motivated more so than the minority men," he said. "And it's a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than do education. It's easier.

This guy's comments should be broadcast everywhere on ye olde internet media. It seems the Tea Party folks have been a little bit more open about their own beliefs lately, or, more likely, they're just so f*%king stupid that they're oblivious to what they're saying. And it's also where, IIRC, Hillsdale College is located.

It's a mostly rural district, with the cities of Champaign, Urbana , And Danville. Along with many small towns. For a closer look, go to Mike Frerichs is the incumbent, has been endorsed by President Obama, and is really tall, 6 foot 9. Mike should win easily, the Northern part of Champaign county has a large group of farmers who are all related, the most common last name in this group is "Frerichs". And after he made the racist comment during the forum, Reynolds repeated it afterward, so he can't claim it was a slip. The most interesting part is, that the leader of the Vermilion County Republican party has demanded that Reynolds drop out of the race. And Al Reynolds was the founder of the local Tea party.

Does he think that he is actually FLATTERING black women by telling us that we are so much better than our fathers/sons/husbands/nephews etc?? I can't even think of a word that adequately describes this man's stupidity.

This entire episode shows what racist scum they are. The TP'ers lack the common decency, scruples, and empathy other folks have. It's simply disgusting some of the public adopted these RW domestic terrorists and placed them on a pedistal.

Every story about their behavior and words gets worse as the days goes by. The real shame is that their is a contingent of people who want to put these uncouth agitators in office.

Many of us who live in multi-cultural cities find these goons repugnant but in more "homogeneous" rural areas these dogwhistles mean votes. It sends the signal of "I'm one of you"...just like telling a good hunting or off color joke. The GOTB has amped up all levels of racism this year cause they know it has worked in the past and is one of the few "selling points" they have left.
