I got laughed out of the room. Apparently, objecting to the "testicles = strength, no testicles = weakness" paradigm is considered "a joke" and "PC run amok".

11. Boy, I'm not! And I got the balls to admit it.
:P

It is sad that we can only use male body parts and masculine imagery to denote strength and courage. And female strength is oft represented as either the strength to suffer, or the fierce wild uncontrolled violent rage of the animal mother defending her children, both of which are really asinine images for strength or courage.

Republicans, of course, practically weep in joy thinking of those metaphors.

135. Depends where you come from...
...I'm British and calling anyone a pussy was the same as calling them a 'scaredy cat'. Isn't that what it means in the US too? It means you're timid, not that you're a female.

Ever watch 'Are You Being Served'? The old lady was always going on about her 'pussy', and yes, the innuendo was the humour because we all know that in the US the term has sexual connotations. But I grew up on Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat where have you been? and Puss In Boots Pantos. I never equate the term 'You're such a Pussy' as having anything to do with females.

Who picked your husband? Who pick the other men around whom you find yourself?

If you find that "every man" you've ever know will "cry as soon as there is a hint of any illness," you're picking weak men to be around.

I've known a lot of men and women, and don't find such traits as you describe more in one group than another.

65. My girlfriend once tossed the remote control onto my lap.
She didn't throw it, mind you, but gently tossed it on my lap. It hit my testicles at the "right" angle, I suppose, and I promptly fell to the ground in pain. I'm no stranger to pain, I hyperextended my knee in high school and tore all my cartilage in my left leg, I used to put out cigars on my tongue in college to amuse people. But that was one of the most painful things that ever happened to me. Sometimes I think having testicles is god's way of putting men in their place.

26. I've spent the last couple of years telling men to "woman up" or to "butch up"...
walking up to guys and saying, "Hey, girls." Telling guys that they don't have the ovaries to _______________... or saying that they've got ovaries of steel.

Pretty much all of the time, they don't like it.

27. I think men must ACTUALLY experience a surge of physical FEELING in their testicles...
when they embark on a brave act, or else WHY does
this expression even exist?

When I embark on a brave act, I DON'T feel a surge
of activity in my ovaries.

I feel it in the pit of my stomach.

Any male care to enlighten me on this theory?

Simple as that. Throughout human history men have assumed their superiority over women in all things, thus, the choice of exclusively male body parts to describe strength, courage and decisiveness and female body parts to describe weakness, cowardlyness and indecisiveness. It was not long ago at all that men actually truely believed that women are were not as intelligent or as capable as men, and sadly some still do believe that.

96. A friend of mine uses "uterus" in similar contexts to any male that-general-vicinity parts
Her rationale being that uteri aren't exactly weak given what they're designed to go through and that her half of the species might as well get in on the anatomical-metaphor-for-strength game.

I try to be ecumenical with that sort of thing myself (I'm a fierce advocate of being a vertebrate), but I kinda liked the approach, and it was unexpected enough that it resulted in my using the male equivalents less often.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense realizes that such figures of speeches are nothing more than that. It doesn't degrade women at all and anyone that thinks it does needs to pull their head out of their fantasy world ass and act like an adult. I guess we could just change the expression to "Have the ovaries....", but then silly people like you will just get all upset because you will claim it degrades women that have had to have their ovaries removed from medical reasons. Yup, thats how insanely silly it is.

I've heard tons of women use those same expressions all the time. Its not going away because there is no reason for it to. You will hopefully grow old and pass on, and people will still be using expressions like that and there isn't anything you can do about it.

148. Sure
We can sit around and talk about expressions like "grow some balls" and "man up" etc., and endlessly moan about how they're sexist and wrong, but the truth is they're basically meaningless parts of the vocabulary being made into something much more than they really are.

They're figures of speech, nothing more. They are not meant as insults to women or anyone else other than the person they're directed at. Telling someone to "grow some balls" has been around for years and the only one who is insulted or offended by it is a politically correct overly-sensitive fool who should spend more time worrying about the shitstorm going on this world rather than this kind of petty nonsense.

I'm sick and tired of people thinking we need to walk on tipee-toes and be oh-so-careful about what we say. And starting a goddamn thread about it seems to me to be ridiculous in the extreme.
