If you have helped a sister, an uncle, a neighbor...
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 09:19 PM by Earth_First
a non-profit, a stranger through the struggles that so many have faced during this 'recession' this thread is for you.

Be it financially, physically or even more important; mentally through the struggles in what has proven to be an assault on the middle-class, I offer you sincere appreciation.

You see, as a Democrat we keep a sense of humanity about us that keeps the entire system afloat.

Thank you for being the most caring individual willing to put the greater good ahead of self to ensure that while we all may be struggling, we do better as a whole than we do as a part.

So with that, my hats off to you this evening...

1. I've been helping a Winger
A guy from my sci-fi club. His brother is having emotional problems, got laid off from his job (at a RW website writing nasty stories about how lazy Dems are), and was in a car accident. This guy is trying to help his brother, but is draining his finances doing so. So, he's been borrowing money off of us. Now the ungrateful a**hole brother is also calling asking for money, but we've told him no.

I understand where he's coming from. My husband was laid off during the tech downturn, and was out for 10 months. I feel bad, but I'm sick and tired of being the ATM for this guy. And no, I haven't made any snarky comments about us lazy Dems working to keep him out of debt. But, we need to make some repairs on our house from our water damage problem this past summer, and the ATM is now closed.

2. I'm helping my best friend
Who is like a mother to me. I've helped her out both financially and mentally the past two years. When her power was about to be cut off earlier this year I helped her out. I've been there for her to talk to when nobody else was. When I can't help her financially, I am there to listen to her, and have a shoulder for her to cry own.

It does make me angry to no end though, to see a woman who has been working all her life, and is currently working full-time yet struggling to pay bills. I am there for her as much as possible but sometimes I wish I could do more.

9. "decency is the difference between the Left and the Right"

"The Left is based on decent, caring attitudes. The Right lacks any concern for others" (paraphrase from my memory.)

Newspaper columnist some years back...

11. flip side-editorial in my paper last week
http://www.thedailylight.com/articles/2010/10/18/opinion/doc4cba8a4545c3b176538631.txt

-snip
"Group one wants to help his fellow man to become self supportive. He has faith that the human race at its base is primarily good (though with evil in it). Because of his faith in the race he seeks to live his own life and help others on a personal level to follow their dreams.

Group two wants the government to help his fellow man, because of his lack of faith in the basic goodness of the human race. Because of this lack of faith he feels that he must control the government to ensure it carries out his vision, he cares not for personal dreams. It is all for the “greater good.”

Either way is not perfect, but the first group puts the burden on individuals to care for themselves, group number two forces a selfish morality on others."
