Palin endorses tea party favorite to replace Stupak
Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 04:23 AM by Kaleva
"Sarah Palin is backing tea party favorite Dan Benishek to represent northern Michigan in Congress.

The former Alaska governor describes the Republican political newcomer on her Facebook page as a "commonsense voice" who supports repealing President Barack Obama's health care plan. He's the 53rd candidate to get the Palin stamp of approval, according to the Washington Post's "Palin Tracker.""

"Republican Dan Benishek is in a virtual tie in the race for Michigan's 1st District U.S. House seat, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Benishek leads state Rep. Gary McDowell, D-Rudyard, 42 percent to 39 percent, in the survey of 404 likely voters released by Washington-insider newspaper the Hill. The 3 percentage point lead is within the 4.9 percent margin of error, and shows a significant shift from early post-primary internal polling in the district, which showed Benishek with double-digit advantages."

"Republican candidate Dan Benishek had $125,000 more cash on hand than Democratic rival Gary McDowell in the key race for Michigan's open 1st District seat in Congress.

Benishek, a surgeon from Crystal Falls, had $308,804 cash on hand, compared with $182,869 for McDowell, a state lawmaker from Rudyard."

Despite the fact McDowell was down in the polls by double digits early on and despite the fact he has raised far less money then Benishek and despite the fact this contest is in a Republican leaning district, Gary McDowell has managed to turn the race into a nail biter.
