Alexander Anderson Jr., creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle dies @ 90
http://www.kansascity.com/2010/10/22/2344376/alexander-anderson-jr-creator.html

Alexander Anderson Jr., recognized as the creator of the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoon, died Friday at a home in Carmel, Calif. He was 90.

Anderson, who attended the University of California, Berkeley, and the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, was a native of Berkeley. He moved to Pebble Beach in 1968. The last four years, his health had declined, his wife Patricia said Friday. They were married for 36 years.

Anderson came from a family of creative artists and in 1938 started working in animation with his uncle Paul Terry in New York at Terrytoons, the studio that created "Mighty Mouse."

During World War II, Anderson was a U.S. Navy spy, his wife said, and in 1946, he returned to Terrytoons to work full time.

Two years later, he pitched the idea to create cartoon characters for television to his uncle.

At the time, the movie studios that Terrytoons produced for dominated the entertainment market and working with television wasn't in their plans. Anderson was told to branch out on his own, according to his son Terry.

Anderson returned to Berkeley where he and childhood friend Jay Ward began production. Ward ran the business side and Anderson handled the artistic and creative work.

One of the greatest cartoon series ever created! Cross gently, Mr Anderson...

21. SAME HERE!
When I was 19, I went to NYC to the MAD offices (13th floor, heh), and got the autographs of all the writers and editors!

MAD, sly cartoons such as R&B, and National Lampoon mag: Nirvana for a Boomer teen!

Loved Fractured Fairy Tales.

It was a radical show.

Loved Boris and Natasha.

17. He created some of my favorite characters
But Anderson did not contribute to the famous R&J series. It is just not true that Ward was business only. They both were freaking brilliant.

18. The only cartoon I could watch with my dad, and we'd be laughing at different parts.
Rocky and Bullwinkle was absolutely brilliant political satire.

RIP, Mr. Anderson.

This 'cartoon' was much more. It was cynical and spot-on commentary about the Cold War we all were living through.

Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris and Natasha.

Not to mention Mr. Peabody and Sherman. And Dudley Do-Right, Nell, Snidely Whiplash and Inspector Fenwick.

My dad was a WWII vet and he thought it was hilarious. As a little kid, I didn't understand all of it until I was older.

Great stuff.

20. Truly sad news.
Rocky and Bullwinkle were my very favorite cartoons when I was young...even a teenager. Loved those guys.

Bullwinkle's family is in mourning, so sad they can't even stand.
