Obama Administration Handed Over Detainees Despite Reports of Torture
Obama administration handed over detainees despite reports of torture

October 22nd, 2010
by Angus Stickler

President Barack Obama’s government handed over thousands of detainees to the Iraqi authorities, despite knowing there were hundreds of reports of alleged torture in Iraqi government facilities.

Washington was warned by the United Nations and many human rights organisations that torture was widespread in Iraqi detention centres.
But the Bureau of Investigative Journalism can reveal the US’s own troops informed their commanders of more than 1,300 claims of torture by Iraqi Security forces between 2005 and 2009.

Prisoner handover

In July 2010, the US completed the handover of 9,250 detainees to the Iraqi authorities.

“US authorities committed a serious breach of international law when they handed over thousands of detainees to Iraqi security forces.”

- Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International

It would be a clear violation of international law, drawn up by the United Nations Convention Against Torture, ratified by the US in 1994, for any government to transfer detainees to a regime at whose hands they face torture or other serious human rights violations.

2. Just saw this. Actually it's not the first time
I've read about this administration continuing the Bush policies on torture.

Eg, denying torture victims the right to sue in this country, citing States Secrets as an excuse for the coverup, has also been policy here.

I also believe that 'rendition' has not been ended

8. Since when does international law apply to us?
Since when does our own constitution apply?

I don't have much to say about this. Apparently torture isn't something Obama's too concerned about, that's become evident during his administration.

11. Fixed the link?
Just google the title if you need the story or need to print it out for dissemination. For some reason the link in the OP is no longer working.

Here's the link again, let's see if it sticks:

13. This is a horrific example of bad policy pursued beyond a bad presidency.
and his actions make Obama complicit in Bush's crimes against humanity.

It was wrong when the Bush administration did it and it is wrong now. disgusting.

Don't see how anyone can justify this.
