Obama video supports gay teenagers
Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 06:03 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
It Gets Better Project receives backing of US president amid concerns over spate of gay American teenagers killing themselves

Barack Obama has released a video to draw attention to pressures facing gay teenagers, lending his weight to a campaign that has attracted more than 2,000 video contributions and 10m views on YouTube.

The campaign, prompted by a spate of gay American teenagers killing themselves in recent weeks, has also received the backing of the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, who has posted her own two-minute video.

In his video, Obama draws parallels with his own upbringing.

"I don't know what it's like to be picked on for being gay. But I do know what it's like to grow up feeling that sometimes you don't belong. "It's tough," he says. "When you're teased or bullied it can seem like somehow you brought it on yourself … With time you're going to see that your differences are a source of pride, a source of strength."

1. impossible.
I thought he hates gays.

You know, like he hates all children and doesn't want them to get an education because he's a corporate sell-out!

3. Yes. His words are nice. But his actions don't back those words.
His actions allow bullying in the military. His actions allow bullying whenever our we try to have our relationships recognized as equal, instead of something separate and stigmatized as less than.

It's great to speak up, but when you have the power to take actions, those actions should speak for you. Where are the actions that give us Equality and Rights?

And not that frequently debunked list of "he said this," and "he invited someone to that" and "he want to someday sign this," and "he has promised to do that." That list has been shown to be a sham, crumbs offered by straight people to try to convince us to be happy with crumbs, offered with all the arrogance of people who think that crumbs is all we deserve.

Where is a real list of real actions leading to real equality, real rights like straight people take for granted every day?

We're still waiting...

9. I am still waiting for a leader that backs up the campaign talk
I fear they no longer exist, words, pretty words, and opposite actions make me consistently feel like a mark every time I get conned by politicians into voting for them.

True human beings would consider equality to be a no-brainer. We are represented by servants to mythical Gods and Corporations instead of human beings.

I have no answers to this problem but I am sick of being just another dumb mark.

The problem is not the straightness of these con men, it is something else, as a "straight" male I have no problem expecting full equal rights for all my brothers and sisters no matter who they love.

Loving anyone should be a cause for celebration, not a reason to fear or hate.

4. He no longer has the right to give pep-talks to the LGBT community
I won't be voting for him again, after this DADT bullshit.

8. Maybe it would help
if these kids didn't feel like second-class citizens in their own country. I'm not saying it's his fault that these poor people killed themselves, but don't you think it would help anyone's psyche to know that they are 'good enough' to be married? Or 'good enough' to serve their country without lying about who they are?
