The Rs will not prevail Tuesday, and they know it.
The polls are all over the place, the methodology sucks and they should all be discarded as being unreliable (including those showing Ds pulling even: the models in those polls suck as well - they should show Ds ahead in most of the key races).
The enthusiasm gap? Let's see, the Ds raise millions from tens of thousands of voters while the Rs get most of their $ from 42 super-wealthy people who can donate millions at a time. The LAT says that the D GOTV effort is superb while the R's GOTV effort is a chaotic mess. The media is calling races where a D enjoys a 9-10 point lead "neck and neck," as if a 10-point lead 6 days out from an election can be overcome over the weekend (especially when the R candidate has been losing ground in the past few weeks, as have Whitman and Fiorina in CA).
So, the media is busy building their narrative that the R juggernaut is unstoppable, while the Rs are holding training sessions for the herd of lawyers they will unleash post-election to challenge any result that has them losing with a margin of 10 points or less.
This is their end strategy - Norm Coleman v Al Franken to infinity and beyond! They will challenge results, claim that they control the House and refuse to seat Ds who were elected to the House. R incumbents who lost to Ds will refuse to give up their seats. They'll deny the exit polling, stating that "we KNOW those things haven't been accurate since 2000 when Bush beat Gore and the exit polls said otherwise!" They'll claim that voter dissatisfaction was so high this time that traditional GOTV efforts meant nothing, even if the polls are clogged with voters for hours on end. They'll claim that the massive D/union GOTV effort was matched by millions of "just plain folks" headin' down to the local barn to cast their votes against the hated Ds. Claims of massive voter fraud will start on Rush and Faux, to be picked up by the MSM within a week of the RWNM starting the ball rolling.
As gut-wrenching as this election cycle has been, the real bullshit begins Nov. 3. The "Rs are a sure win in 2010" meme has been created in large part to support the claims that are going to be made by the Rs POST election, ie: how could EVERYBODY - the pollsters, the MSM, Karl Rove, even the NYT - possibly have been so wrong? Sounds like shenanigans to us!
They are looking to "create a new reality" by acting like their fiction has become a reality simply by repeating it often enough (and with conviction, of course!).
Trust me on this.
I hope our D leaders are prepared for this, because the Rs have already decided to take no prisoners this time around.
