Another idea - instead of assholes in Congress making decisions that changes our lives
how about if we VOTE on it? Get important stuff passed and signed into law, like we vote on propositions and stuff. That way, if there's a filibuster, then let us DECIDE. Thanks!

Thanks!

1. Good luck with that.
We'll need a couple of Constitutional amendments, and even if it could be done, who is going to have the time or inclination to draft and then read and understand bills that are often hundreds of pages long? The reason we have representatives in Congress is because the complexity of the legislative process at the federal level doesn't lend itself at all well to a referendum-style method.

Also, as stupid as many members of Congress are, do you really want rank-and-file teabaggers and all the other ignorant watchers of FOX "News" deciding this stuff?

2. participatory democracy
the holy grail.

i really like the idea but remember that EVERYONE gets to vote, not just the informed (though how that could be worse than an oklahoma senator voting on climate change "i'm for climate change" i don't know)

4. This is sort of how it is supposed to work though - we elect these people to represent US and what
we want and need. Unfortunately they are bought and sold to the highest bidder.

5. I would have no problem with a pure democracy
alot of the reasons things happen in the country, is because when the Constitution was written it took a week to ride from Washington DC to New York, so it was deemed necessary like the electoral college, to get stuff done. But now its time for things to change.

6. Read up on the "National Initiative" at this link....
It is a proposal for such an idea...see what you think.

I can't decide about this myself....I see good and bad.
