America is scaring me again.
To think that the US is on the verge of going back on the first signs of progress I have seen in over 10 years is really very frightening. 8 years of Bush not only embroiled the world in 2 dangerous and unnecessary wars but brought the world to the brink of a global depression (word I still out as to whether we have managed to escape that one yet). And lets not forget the wholesale scrapping of social and political freedoms, the open racism, the free flowing hate. Much of this has continued unabated under Obama as well, but for ONCE in over a decade we started to see the US SLOWLY claw its way out of the dark hole it had dug itself. It was slow and painstaking and the gains that have been made have not been without compromises and setbacks, some wins smelling almost more of defeat than victory. I wouldn't call Obama the beacon of hope that everyone had been praying for, he's a politician much like any other. BUT for once we DID start to see progress in the right direction. Now only 2 years into this slow and painful recovery the US seems to be on the verge of throwing it all away a second time. Maybe I see things through tinted glasses viewing things from up here in Canada but the Tea Party and much of it's following seem hard to distinguish from Fascists at times. I hope that in the long run that sanity will win out but that's not the direction I see things headed in. Some times, times like these, America scares me.

1. It scares me too.
Consider yourself lucky you live in a much saner and more humane country than your batshit crazy neighbor to the south. :scared:

3. Your tinted glasses are correct
but I think we are in for a surprise...

Call it the ... minorities and ceil phone effect... and if I am right, the TEA party will have to look for other means, scary yes.

That said this is a proto fascist movement (on a good day) a full fledged fascist movement on a bad day.

4. No, the Freakshow Media are scaring you
Most Americans go to work, buy groceries, unclog their toilets, pick their kids up from school, give canned goods to the postal food drive, brush their teeth, try to figure out how to pay their bills, check on their elderly neighbors, watch some tv, and worry about the future

6. The problem is "The best lack all conviction, while the worst. Are full of passionate intensity"...
I don't fear the average American you describe. I fear the ones that are actually getting out there to vote. :(

8. Our country is bought and sold
by the big money.
Then by the time you get home with your new product, buyer remorse will set in. Took 8 years for Bush to be found out and his numbers sunk to all time lows.
Same thing is about to happen. Give it a few years.

11. Canada has it's own right wing nut jobs...
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 06:31 PM by Locut0s
We have Steven Harper right now. Luckily even he is likely not going to be able to ever do the kind of damage he / they would like too. I do love living here but there are other countries to look up to as political exemplars. Scandinavia come immediately to mind as does much of Europe.

12. Countries where people advocate torture and wars of choice SHOULD scare you
And it's only going to get worse as the nation declines into third world status.
