3. So are they coming out to show how happy they are?
Bigger-than-usual turnout is a bad sign for the Dems, right?

6. Are you being sarcastic?
Big voter turnout is traditionally a great sign for Dems.

18. No I meant it, but I hope you're right
I had thought that high numbers would mean that highly-motivated, angry anti-status quo people are turning out in large numbers, which would favor the GOP.

As in:

Record Republican Engagement Drives High Turnout ForecastRecord Republican Engagement Drives High Turnout Forecast

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1787/2010-pre-election-survey-gop-win-house-wide-turnout-advantage-engagement-gap?src=prc-latest&proj=pej

Having said that, I hope I'm wrong and you're correct.

41. I get what you are saying, but the estimates of turnout that people predicted
assumed HIGH Republican turnout and mediocre Democratic turnout - these anecdotes need HIGH turnout for BOTH.

Nate Silver had one column of the number of races that flip back to use if our numbers are 1% and 2% higher respectively. IF these accounts are true and wide spread, the results - still losses - would be far less than expected. There are many close races - that we win (registered voters) and they win (likely voters). As our % voting approaches theirs, the RV model is better than the LV one.

7. Reports are of good turnout in urban areas and some Dem. districts
Hope it's a good sign! I just can't understand how PA could forget so quickly.

And thanks for the thread, CatWoman! :hi:

I don't know if I'd necessarily consider it a Dem stronghold by any stretch.

Sorry.

14. It has a rating of D+2 so it's slightly Democratic
However if it is Toomey's old district, his former supporters might be coming out extra to support him. Hard to say if the high turnout there is good or bad for Dems.

20. Recommended.
Although I'm in NYS, I have an aunt and cousins in PA. My aunt is one of the most impressive human beings that I've ever met. She's an "old school" democrat, and university professor, who has held elected office in the state. (I used to hang out with my cousins and their neighbor, who is now a US Senator.)

Anyhow, my cousins and aunt have worked harder this year than any other to get out the vote in PA!

32. The 15th is Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton
It's kind of a funny mix -- I live south of there and I've never felt I had a grasp on the voting patterns in the 15th. Basically kind of rust belt -- and very heavy on the rust part these days. Traditionally socially conservative, working class voters who tend to go Republican -- but there are also a lot more Hispanics than there used to be.

Toomey isn't a native, either. He was born in Rhode Island and doesn't seem to have had any connection with Pennsylvania until he retired from the banking business and opened a restaurant in Allentown in 1991.

So it isn't at all clear to me what the heavy turnout might mean.

34. High voter turnout in Milwaukee polling station
I am very excited to read these posts reporting high voter turnout. I volunteered to be a poll observer for the Democratic Party here in Milwaukee, WI and I was assigned to a voter station which is in a predominantly African American neighborhood. Even at about 9:00 this morning the volunteers, who have been at this location for years, said they were shocked at how high the turnout was. Higher even, according to the Chief Coordinator, than the last presidential election. Until I left at 1:00, they continued to express their ammazement at the high turnout - which may not be as high as other neighborhoods - but they said it was very high. Never seen numbers this high before. There has been a huge effort in this area to call people and it appears to be working - for the Democrats especially. I worked a phone bank yesterday and got to meet Russ Feingold. When I met him I said, "It is my pleasure to meet you," and he took several steps away and turned around and said, "No, it is my pleasure to be able to meet you." I must say, I was thrilled and overall feel very hopeful in spite of all the bad news on the news. Hope is alive. We can't do without a Russ Feingold.
