I Finally Get It
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 11:28 PM by blur256
I do not post here very often. This is not from apathy, but rather from the illusion that my voice will merely be lost in the crowd. Instead, I like to sit back and read what is going on, and form my opinions internally. But I think I have finally seen why this is not a good strategy. I am literally distraught by the election results tonight. I care just as much as everyone else here about the future of this great nation. Yet, I, like many of the democratic voters, have decided that is not our place to decide the fate of the rest of the country. I have believed for a long time in the thought that there will always be differing views on many issues in this country, but that level heads from all sides will prevail. Sure, I go out and vote, but to what gain? If I do not go out and shout why the government will be lost in the hands of Republicans, how am I any better than those that spew the opposite from the right?

I am scared for the future of this country if people like myself cannot work up the courage to get out there and spread the word like it really is. The belief that democrats can get by on mediocrity is skewed. That may be true in an ideal world in which both sides of the aisle care about the same things. But tonight, we have learned that is not the case. The right believes that minorities such as African Americans, Hispanics, and the GLBT community are not good enough to be considered a part of this country. The right believes that the government should be limited except when it comes to the rights of its citizens. The right believes that Christianity is the only religion that should be worshiped in this country despite the hypocrisy that it entails. The right believes in corporate freedoms over the rights of the individuals. The right believes that the government can fix a major deficit by cutting taxes.

Ladies and gentleman, I am angry. But not at the successes of the republicans and tea partiers for their successes. I am angry with myself for not standing up to those who believe they are better than everyone else in this country. I am angry with myself for not standing up to those who let hate get in the way of common sense and decency. I am angry with myself for not standing up to those who will let our country go to ruin for their own political gains.

If I have learned anything from this battle it is that I cannot be silent anymore. I have learned that hate speaks louder than wisdom only when wisdom cannot be found. I have learned that people will spit in the face of common sense when it comes to themselves perceiving that they are right.
But I have also learned that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Of all the people I asked today who they would have voted for if they had voted, they all responded they would have voted democratic. The votes are out there, but we must learn to foster them. We can shout wisdom just as loudly as others shout ignorance and hate. We cannot take for granted anymore that people will ultimately vote for wisdom, because everyone assumes wisdom will win. Wisdom only wins when we vote for it. We MUST press on. The future is ours if we choose to pursue it and we must.

2. All those uncounted votes, apathy is a terrible thing. We get more standing together..
than not. Lets hope people in the party get their acts together or in two years we will have more pain. Perhaps the would be voter will then do their civic duty.:thumbsup

6. Thank you!
I was just sitting here, watching the results, getting
depressed, thinking what is wrong with these people [or what
is wrong with me] don't they get what they have done. They
think they have won, but they lost. Cooperations won. They
say they want to see jobs--well they're going overseas, they
want to decrease the deficit, but keep the tax breaks for the
very wealthy. They talk about being Christians, but they are
so judgmental and intolerant, isn't that the opposite of what
Jesus taught? I rarely post but enjoy this site, I don't feel
so alone.

7. Glad to know it is not just me...
I am vowing to become more active starting now. We are a democratic society and yet we do not act like. It is about time we do.

8. I'm glad you get it, and decided to post.
:)

Can I make one suggestion though? For those of us who have some vision difficulties, large dense blocks of text can be very difficult to read.

Could you please separate your paragraphs with a blanks line between them? That way, it breaks up the block of text and it is easier on the eyes and easier to read.

Thank you! :)
