Too bad we didn't know there was an election in 2010
If we had known there was an election in 2010 then we would have structured the health-care bill in such a way that enough people would have received a tangible benefit by 2010 that they would not allow the bill to be gutted.

And it was a mean trick springing a surprise election on us in 2010 since unemployment was certain to be around 10% in 2010.

Had we known there was an election scheduled we might have sought to make unemployment lower before the election happened.

By hey... nobody could have known.

2. Who could have seen it coming?
How could have anticipated losses after two years of 10% unemployment.

The question is, will we realize that another election is coming up in two years, and people still need jobs?

3. Everybody already has had yearly and lifetime limits removed.
People with preexisting conditions now have access to a government run high risk pool, until preexisting conditions are banned.

And millions of young adults are now covered on their parents policies.

4. And they can't afford the underlying care
The number of people who can't afford to use that health insurance might surprise you.

5. Some of us predicted that reforms had to convey immediate benefits -or we'd get no credit

But nobody in leadership credited that warning.

You can't be sure exactly where unemployment will be two years out from your Inauguration. But you can be sure that a Great Depression scale financial calamity brought on by bank fraud is a crime scene with prosecutable villains. And if people are still hurting from the economic collapse 2 years after your election, you can deflect their anger by PROSECUTING SOME VILLAINS in the meantime. That's not cynical politics, that's just putting blame where it fucking belongs and making sure EVERYONE knows who is responsible for our pain.

There was no lack of crimes or villains to pursue while we pursued meaningful reform. The two lines of attack were COMPLEMENTARY. One was pursued in a demoralizing corrupt manner and the other one was completely neglected. Looking forward! Moving On! Shielding the crooks from blame empowered the criminals to commit future crimes and invited the popular wrath on our own heads, instead of theirs.
