Lame duck session should be used for progressive legislation
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 03:25 PM by andym
Democrats still hold huge majorities in both houses. The current Congress should try to use the remaining lame duck session to pass progressive legislation, such as capping premiums in HCR (or even adding a public option), repealing DADT, passing Cap and Trade, Immigration reform, perhaps even a work bill (like the WPA) or a small business stimulus bill.

If reconciliation is needed to bypass a Senate filibuster, then use it. Of this will ruin the spirit of compromise with the GOP who will call "foul", but so what?

Why do it now, when they did nothing before?
Most of the blue dogs have nothing to lose that they haven't already lost. Everybody else realizes nothing of consequence can pass in the next two years, so any work has to be done now.

We can help by a lobbying push starting today.

1. And every piece should be called a "Jobs Bill" regardless of what it is about.

3. I really hate to say this,
but the house lame duck can't do a whole lot of anything before they pass some appropriations.

7. Anyone who thinks this will actually happen is deluded. The House was marginally better than
the Senate, but producing progressive legislation?

Never gonna happen.

19. "deluded" is, unfortunately, the proper term in this case.

never mind "the huge majorities in both houses". (huh? did I miss something?)

Listen to Mr. President himself if in any doubt/confusion as to what his plan for the next couple of years re. "working together with the Rebulicans" is.

9. But won't be.
And if Reid is retained as Leader for the next Congress it will be a clear signal that they plan to change nothing about their approach in the Senate.

11. Aren't there hundreds of pieces of legislation already passed by the house
and bogged in the Senate? PASS THEM as many as you can. END THE FILIBUSTER

16. Fix it then
lower the number required for cloture. And or Make them actually filibuster, America should know the reasons they are filibustering. The Rule needs changed.

17. Apparently they need 2/3 of the Senate to change the rules during a session of congress
But only a simple majority at the beginning of a session. So they can't change the filibuster rule until next year.

18. Agree: Disclose Act and fix bankruptcy - those are urgent.
They need to get everything through that they possibly can, any way they can. This is the last chance for a while.

20. It's not going to happen because we don't control the senate. Kirk is the first of the new
senators to be sworn in. Some of the loser blue dogs won't back progressive legislation either because they have dreams of running again.

24. If you think Blue Dogs have nothing to lose then you don't understand Blue Dogs
They are corporate slaves.. They are owned by their masters and if they want to be taken care of for the rest of their lives by their masters they must do their master's bidding until the very end.. No one expects to be in
congress forever, it is now about how feathered their beds will be from here on out..
