S.C. authorities arrest GOP consultant over robo-calls

By JOHN O'CONNOR - McClatchy Newspapers COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina's State Law Enforcement Division arrested Republican political consultant Robert Cahaly on Wednesday over a series of robo-calls made during election season.

Cahaly was arrested in Anderson. The calls were placed in six South Carolina House districts, including two Midlands districts in Richland and Kershaw counties. The calls sounded like a poll, asking those on the phone if the district's Democratic candidates should invite U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to campaign on their behalf.

But the calls do not identify who paid for them, which is a misdemeanor violation of state law.

"SLED has determined that these illegal calls were made through a Richland County landline telephone number owned by Gadsden and Greene Strategies, which is also owned by Cahaly," the agency said in a news release.

2. Awesome. This should happen more often.
They'll think twice if they know they might get arrested.

3. I'm surprised.
Good for SLED. Unfortunately, the wingnuts in the state lege. will find a way to let this dirt bag off the hook.

5. Don't be.
For a state rife with good ole boy politicians and (some) police, there are a good number of police/law enforcement there who know a lot - and it has jaded some of their thinking against Republicans.

SLED is a pretty decent organization. I knew a lot of those guys when I lived in Anderson during my reporting days.

6. A Republican posing as a Dem poll worker in SF stole ballots and was arrested.

I suspected when the light is turned on the cockroaches will scatter. Hopefully the authorities will be there with a big net to catch them.
