I'm going to agree with the Democratic Leadership on the war funding bill
Edited on Wed May-23-07 01:03 PM by HamdenRice
Let me stand in for the Democratic leadership and explain why, in the end, providing the president with a bill without withdrawal timetables was the right thing to do.

The main thing to keep in mind is the end game -- what would have happened if they had sent Bush another bill with timetables that he would have vetoed. At some point down the line, Bush would have started doing things with the military to pretend that he was running out of money and blaming the Democrats.

Politics is chess, not checkers. Even though the Democrats have no obligation to providing funding, politically at the end of the day it would have been impossible not to do so. Ultimately the Repugs would have blamed the Democrats for not supporting the troops, putting them in danger and contributing to the loss of the war. The Repugs would have taken their own war loosing record and pinned it on the Democrats.

We already have certain weaknesses in the public's mind on national security issues compared to the Repugs, and this would have exacerbated that image. To fail to fund the war now would bring back painful memories of the idea that politicians, not the troops, lost the Vietnam War.

In the meantime the back and forth of another (or two or more) funding bills would have been so much kibuki theater. We already know what the end stage would have been so why bother standing up to and fighting the president on this issue, when there are other more pressing matters to attend to.

PS: I don't believe one word of the above analysis. I think, I could be wrong, that I've managed to write a post that is devoid of a single thing I believe.

:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

It's just that I know that everyone is angry right now and virtually no one has stepped up and to defend the leadership's analysis, so I am presenting my on line persona as your personal pariah dog, your sacrifical lamb. Go ahead and kick me. Pretend for today I'm the Congressional Democrats and have at me. I'll put on my flame retardant suit.

Please be aware, however, that I will not answer any of your criticisms of my position with anything other than the most purile, poll tested DLC talking points!

1. the blood of every soldier killed after this bill is just as much on the hands
of nancy Pe-Lousy as the hands of W.

The dems have 70% of the population backing them, and they frittered away their advantage. Now, the president knows he can push them around by a simple threat, and most of America knows we can't trust her and the leadership to stand up to fascism, deceit and worse.

20. That already happened, remember?
May 1, 2007

President Bush used his veto pen for only the second time Tuesday after Congress sent him a war spending bill that would impose timelines to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, which he called a “prescription for chaos.”

6. You are sooooo bad!
You'd better pray that people don't get their blood boiling so much that they don't read the end of your post, otherwise you're dead before the day is done.

I was going to righteously roast you, but then I read your last sentences and all of the fury boiled away. No fun at all!

12. Politics is the art of compromise, not confrontation. We need to reach across the aisle
and reach out to the president.

How's that for blood boiling-making rhetoric?

11. Seriously. Even I Can't Defend The Dems This Time. It Was Just So Goddamn Anti-Climactic.
There are times when one must stand up and resolve themselves to going head to head in battle and do so with courage, conviction and fearless demeanor. This is one of those times.

In my opinion, we needed them so badly to take on that head to head battle this time. This was the perfect opportunity to lay everything on the line and stand on principle, while showing to the American people where we stand, why we stand, and that we can lead in the face of ignorance, obstinance and arrogance. They should not have backed down.

Politics is a chess match for certain. But one who plays it safe will not beat a pro; ever. In politics, what matters most is your message, and delivering that message with leadership, strength and courage. We had the opportunity to do just that but instead in our own ways cowered.

I'm still trying to understand exactly what the strategy of this bill is and the reasonings behind what they're doing. I'm trying to be objective and maintain faith in my Dems that in the end they have more up their sleeves then this. But having that said, for the time being I'm thoroughly disappointed so far with their actions.

Here's to hoping the future brings us a bit more fighting spirit.
