Police: Wife loses lip after calling man short

SAN MATEO, California (AP) -- A man accused of biting off his wife's bottom lip after she called him short has rejected a plea offer and will stand trial next month, prosecutors said.

Akano Nzerem, 54, of South San Francisco, is charged with felony counts of domestic violence, mayhem, false imprisonment, battery and making criminal threats.

Nzerem told police he was provoked by his wife attacking him first and calling him a short man, according to the district attorney's office.

Police said Nzerem shoved aside his 16-year-old daughter when she tried to intervene in the argument. He then allegedly grabbed his wife in a bear hug and bit off her lip.

But you know that was very painful. Apparently he must have been called short a lot in his past and when his wife said it, he let all the past emotions build up and took it out on her.

inquiring minds want to know. :)

My husband and I hardly never ever fight, but if the worse thing we ever called each other is "short" that would be a fabulous improvement. :)

They got in an argument in the back seat of my car. The older brother then reached over like his was going to give his younger brother a Michael Corleone on Freddo Corleone kiss, but instead he bit his nose almost all the way off.

I had to take them to the emergency room, where the nose was sewn back on.

Were you a cab driver? What were they arguing about?

But don't get the wrong impression, these were very modern urban guys who had been helping me with some research earlier in the day. The sad part was the situation: the older brother was something of a gangster who had dropped out of high school to make money to pay for the schooling of the younger brother. The younger brother was an architecture student at university.

The younger brother was making fun of and disrespecting the older brother. The older brother was saying something like, I sacrificed my chance at an education to support you and protect you from the township thugs, and now you're going to disrespect me like that? It's a big respect deal in South Africa who is the older brother, and the younger brother really wasn't being very respectful.

We had also drunk a lot of beer earlier in the evening.

So big brother reaches over and does the Michael Corleone thing but with a little bite!

They made up after the nose was sewn back on and the next morning the younger brother told me, I really shouldn't disrespect him like that ever again -- but not just because he nose had been bitten almost off.
