not sharing the pain at CSU
Times are tough for students in the California State University (CSU) system. Fees are up, and it's harder than ever to enroll in required classes.

But not everyone is suffering.

"a retired Cal State Fullerton administrator who currently is working as the Interim Director of University Planning received a salary of $165,104 for this less than half-time position. ... his ... part-time salary of $165,104, when combined with his CSU retirement income of $105,129 amounts to $270,233.

1. It seems to me that the Irascible professor is onto something here.
Even if the gentleman who is working at CSU is a wonderful and talented person, perhaps his income exceeds how valuable his contributions are to the University.

It almost smacks of "I've got mine, and too bad about you students."

3. This needs a '60s-style student demonstration.
And btw, these ridiculous education costs that students pay then get passed along to the public for years afterward in the form of such extremely high fees for professional services (doctors, lawyers, etc.) that most of the public can't afford them at all anymore.

4. It's getting worse all the time.
The Bush tax cuts take from the poor and give to the rich. That's the Dooh Nibor principle.

Eventually 1% of the people will have almost all the wealth. The economy will center on the "needs" of the very rich, whose every whim will demand a vast expenditure of labor by the bottom 99% of the population.

What's wrong with this picture?

6. CSU tuition set to spike
Maybe you've already heard this, but

"The Cal State University Board of Trustees voted on Wednesday to hike tuition by 15 percent.

"The increase, intended to offset a shortage in state funding, will go into effect next year - 5 percent on Jan. 1 and an additional 10 percent increase next fall."

Does this remind you of Alice in Wonderland? She was running as fast as she could, but the goal kept getting farther away. The red queen (or was it the white queen?) told her she would have to run much faster just to stand still.

7. correction
According to wikipedia:

The Red Queen's race is an incident that appears in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass (not Alice in Wonderland) and involves the Red Queen, a representation of a Queen in chess, and Alice constantly running but remaining in the same spot.

"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else — if you run very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."

"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"
