Mike Luckovich: Four days in Afghanistan

Our first stop was a military hospital near Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Most of the wounded we saw were victims of roadside bombs. Tom Richmond, a Mad magazine cartoonist (front row, left), and I (second from right) sketched the soldiers and then the other four comic strip cartoonists did separate drawings of their characters. It was just a small thing, but sketching them was a way to say thank you.

I took the photo of Garry Trudeau back at the barracks, doing his Sunday comic strip. This is Garry’s 40th year of Doonesbury. It was remarkable to me that here he was in Afghanistan and he was concerned about doing a strip that was topical and fresh

This was the bomb shelter we were told to use in case we were attacked. We ended up using it as a drawing board. On the far right is my sketch of the Obama Hope poster, only I wrote, “Hope you come home soon.”
