Wichita man pleads guilty, admits to collecting 3 million child-porn images
THREE MILLION?!?!?

WICHITA | A Wichita man on Monday admitted he collected more than 3 million photographs of child pornography.

Donald W. Schmidt, 74, pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography, authorities said.

In his plea, Schmidt admitted he was trading child pornography over the Internet via a peer-to-peer network when a police investigator in Florida downloaded child pornography from Schmidt’s computer.

Wichita police served a search warrant at Schmidt’s home in Wichita last March.

1. Call me dreadfully naive, but
3 million images? I wouldn't have imagined there was that much child porn out there. That's not only shocking but horrifying.

4. Too many vulnerable children in Russia, Thailand, Cambodia, etc.
Some of them might agree to some naked photos because it's the only way they can get money for their families to live on. But the vast majority of them, I'm sure, have absolutely no say at all in the matter. They are human sex slaves and are treated as suck, to the horror of our species as a whole.

...I think I'd take a hard look at myself and say "Self, I think you've got a seriously fucked-up obsession here. Maybe you should seek serious professional help."

I don't know of that many computer users or photo enthusiasts who have three million anything, legal or not. Damn.

7. There are a lot of these guys out there
I knew one that had his own business and molested his own daughter.
He collected child porn and gave up his rights as a parent instead of
seeking help. It is an illness and compulsion.

8. I knew a guy when I was in college who had an amazing porn collection
Not child porn (that I knew of at that time, that is), but adult porn. He spent money he didn't really have on porn. He had comic books, and magazines and old movies from the early part of the 20th century. It was just unbelievable. He was a poor college student who had an entire room in his apartment full of porn.

The father you spoke of had to make a choice. Unfortunately, he chose to violate the bond that a father and daughter should normally have. Treating it as a disease won't solve anything. Treating it as a crime, however, will.

My wife knew a guy who turned out to be the exact same predator on his own daughter. He's serving life in prison last I heard (multiple rape charges), but he thought he was such hot shit because he watched all those crime dramas and knew how to get rid of the evidence. Apparently, he didn't. Idiot.

18. Actually, it's a pretty safe prosecution strategy
If he'd been found not guilty, they could have charged him again for a different image. It's not double jeapordy because each image is a crime of its own.

Let's say you're a third striker and you robbed three banks in one day. There's nothing stopping the DA from charging you only for the first robbery, knowing that you'll be locked away for life if convicted. And if you're exonerated, he can always charge you with the next one.

This guy gave the DA 3 million tries.
