Eight in 10 Americans back 'naked' airport scanners: poll
WASHINGTON — Americans overwhelmingly back the full-body scanners that produce graphic images of the body, which are being deployed in airports around the country, a poll published Tuesday shows.

Eight in 10 Americans say airports should use the full-body X-ray machines that show the body, genitalia and all, the poll by CBS News shows.

Fifteen percent are against the digital X-ray machines, which some rights groups have called an unconstitutional invasion of privacy, the poll said.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began rolling out full-body scanners at US airports in 2007, but stepped up deployment of the devices this year when stimulus funding made it possible to buy another 450 of the advanced imaging technology scanners.

There may be a few things that 80% of Americans agree on, but there's not a chance in Hell that this is one of them.

1. I call BS too.
You couldn't 80% of the US to agree the moon isn't of cheese.

3. If it means a shorter wait in line, I believe it. Absolutely.
If it meant more legroom and working bathrooms in coach, I bet you could get that number up to 98%.

6. Yeah but how many Americans have passports? There is the sample you should ask.
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 03:09 AM by Loudmxr
On edit the closest figures I can come up with is somewhere between 20%-25% with an indeterminate number that have expired.

And who needs to see Paris or Venice when we've got Las Vegas!!!

7. Lots of Americans travel domestically, without any need of passports.
I'm not buying your logic.

8. I went to a nude beach once, here in So. Cal...
Waaay back when I was young, and not ashamed of my naked body. I thought to myself I'd be embarrassed because I'd be walking around with a hard-on. What actually happened was that the Little General was in full retreat. All day long.

I've been in many locker rooms and showers where nudity wasn't seen as any big deal.

You wanna look at the Little General on a TV screen? Wait let me undo my 501's...

9. Y'know, I'm curious...
"More than 1,130 adults were interviewed last week by landline or mobile phone for the poll, which has a margin of error of around three percent."

We're a nation of nearly four hundred million people. Can 1,130 people really have a 97% chance of representing the position of all those people?

11. I say bullshit.
Take this poll at the airports that have these scanners. I am confident that people will be very pissed off once they are confronted with the reality of being ogled by TSA or being groped by them.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 06:57 AM by JohnyCanuck

if they knew there is still a gaping hole (so to speak) that a terrorist could exploit to get past the new backscatter X-ray machines and grope and feel searches. See Anderson Cooper's guest in this CNN interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX_4SbR9M_4&feature=player_embedded

After seeing that, I think all those who really think these backscatter X-ray machines and aggressive groping feel-up are necessary to combat terrorists have no option but to demand pre-boarding anal-probes as well. I mean no price can be too high for safety, and what's a little temporary embarrassment on your part if it prevents a terrorist with a bomb up his rear from getting on your flight.

17. 8 in 10 don't have to fly for a living
well, probably higher than that. the poll should be addressed to people who fly at least once a year and another poll of people who fly once a month would be more 'revealing'... otherwise the poll is useless.

18. Body Scanners.
I read a study that 1 in 1,000 people who are CAT scanned develop cancer in their lifetime. Radiologist's take this seriously and now some will refuse to CAT scan say a 10 y/o with a sports injury opting for x-ray instead. If you travel often and are scanned often what do you think your chances of developing cancer are? My bet is these scanners will eventually kill more people than a terrorist.
