I am now worried that my transsexual spouse will be sexually assaulted at the airport.
This article takes place at an airport in Israel, but I don't see any checks to stop such abuses from happening here. Since he is in a pre-surgical state it might be okay because he might pass as a masculine woman. Maybe. He already wants to keep his passport as "F" (even though it can be changed to reflect his appearance) so that he can be screened by female TSA agents, who he thinks are less likely to assault him. The x-ray machine is out of the question for a number of reasons--reason 1: his genitals are going to be of major interest as a transperson and will likely flag him for pat-down screening anyway. 2: he is a cancer survivor and he doesn't need the radiation.

What kind of society do you live in when you need to worry about changing identifiers on your documents to avoid public sexual assault? Not a very good one.

1. So much for the argument that the Israelis system is better than ours.

The behavior of these screeners was OUTRAGEOUS.

Sorry that you and your spouse have this additional worry.

2. I don't see how you can even stop this sort of behavior once you give people the right to conduct
these types of scans. They're looking for abnormality. Transsexuals are physiologically different. This gives them all the excuse they need under the cover of law to humiliate transgender people.

6. Just a thought, readmoreoften.
In order to carry my c-pap machine on the plane, I have to carry a letter saying that it is doctor-prescribed medical equipment.

What would you think about the FAA allowing transgender people or other people with "differences" (people with implants, women with breast pads, etc.) to carry a letter that would let them bypass any extra screening? (In other words, they might still have to have the scan or pat-down, but the screener would ignore the "difference"?

7. There is now a procedure. A carry letter leads to EXTRA screening but in private.
And you can have someone with you to protect against abuse. Of course, that's if you're traveling with someone...

4. I can understand why, based on what happened to Sharon in the article.
How cruel and humiliating. :(

If for no other reason than I am a bit too worried about what I will do to them, than what they will do to me.

Fuck The Police State.

Period.

This is one of the many Issues The Authoritarian Worshipers on this Site don't ever seem to address.

Every day in this country I wake up to some new Nightmare.

It's getting to be more than I can take.
