2. The Nation by a nose over Harper's. The Nation is more informative, Harper's more enjoyable. nt

6. I subscribed to all of them recently,
except Monthly Review that doesn't have a secure (https) way to purchase a subscription. So far I like Mother Jones as a good blend of informative and enjoyable. I agree that The Nation is the most informative. I didn't realize it's a weekly magazine when I got the subscription.

9. I had a subscription to The Nation for a long long time, but their publication
became heavy with advertisements, pushing out content. I do miss it though, and visit their site often.

10. Ramparts
I know it went out of business in 1975, but it was incredibly readable.

Even without Ramparts on the list I would still vote for others, including

Rolling Stone

International Socialist Review

Hightimes

In These Times

11. Most of the information in the magazines is redundant to me,
because I read it on the Web first. That is as I expected. I subscribed to help support liberal/progressive/leftist media. And, I subscribed in search of alternative sources for my parents. I got tired of hearing how I "have to read this article in Time magazine".

12. Does the New Yorker not count?
In its absence, I voted Harper's, mainly because I tend to read more of it than the Nation.

13. I've read the New Yorker for decades.
My dad read it when it was put out on papyrus scrolls, I believe. :D

They print a LOT Of book excerpts, but do not call them book excerpts. At the end of the year, you would have read a goodly portion of 20 or 30 books if you had done that.

For example, they had an article by Nora Ephron about her disappointing inheritance from her uncle. She was depressed but she had to work on her screenplay to get money. The screenplay she was working on was "When Harry Met Sally".

So a couple of weeks later, she's on Bill Maher's show and I realize her autobiography "I Remember Nothing" has just come out.

Back in the 1970s they printed THE FATE OF THE EARTH by Jonathan Schell in 3 issues, which was about all the devastation that nuclear war would cause.
