What not to wear? Clothing a security line issue
What not to wear? Clothing a security line issue

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It was no crime of fashion, but Wendy Gigliotti's bulky sweater and ankle-length skirt made her a target of airport screeners.

A female Transportation Security Administration officer at Sacramento International Airport told her, "We can't tell if there's something under your skirt." She was then frisked in a way she said felt more intrusive than a physical exam.

"I felt not only like a criminal, I felt absolutely violated," said Gigliotti.

Gigliotti is among the travelers feeling mortified or even outraged by the more thorough security pat-downs the TSA began using this month as the holiday travel season begins.

Travel experts say the new scrutiny underscores the need for better airport fashion choices that can help people breeze through screenings with their dignity intact.

Clothes loaded with metal studs are suddenly a no-no, as are bras with underwires. Slacks instead of skirts are preferred. Any baggy clothing can require extra inspection.

2. No underwire bras? Are you kidding me? No baggy clothes?
On a plane? Can I be comfortable? Unreal.

3. most underwire bras these days don't use actual metal
I have all manner of boob lockdown bras none of which use any metal. I think bra companies started doing away with metal clasps, adjusters and underwires because of such prevalent use of metal detectors as well as the issue of rust.

Baggy clothes I understand since baggy clothing has always been useful for drug smugglers, shoplifters and other reasons to attempt to hide things, but I think just how baggy should be better looked into.

One thing I'm curious and concerned about is how the pat-down works with women wearing any kind of skirt. I'm going to be horrified if they're touching genitals underneath right on bare skin or underwear.

Thank God I don't fly. I'd never put up with any of this shit including taking off shoes and having to walk in stocking or bare feet on the filthy floor where millions upon millions of other stocking footed and bare footed people have been walking... there's a damn good reason why shoes are required in public or private buildings and it's hardly just because of foot injury liability... it's a health issue.

6. I'm glad I don't fly either because I like to wear skirts
and I don't want someone's hands on my bare leg or the edge of my underpants. :puke:

14. so what?
One individual's anecdotal evidence matters? Clearly, other people - and a lot of them - have "problems" with these invasive procedures. Of course, if you're ok with being so invasively searched for just wanting to get on an airplane (or just wanting to get OFF of one considering they're doing this same shit to people who have just gotten OFF a plane) then it would be apparent that you haven't had any "problems" according to what your own personal definition of a "problem" is.

27. are you a bit touchy?
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 07:48 PM by Skittles
I'M JUST RELATING MY EXPERIENCES. So you think it's fine when people who never fly express outrage but get upset when someone who flies regularly relates theirs? And my opinion is JUST AS RELEVANT AS those who do fly and have experienced problems. Get the f*** OVER yourself.

5. And take care of what's in any pockets
When I went through London Gatwick on my way to Cuba last month something kept tripping the sensors. After a while even the security guards were amused - they could see I was wearing just a sleeveless shirt and chinos. Turned out to be the silver paper from some chewing gum in the shirt pocket.

11. That TSA telling the speedo guy to put clothes back on so they could grope him was cool
This was NEVER about security. What POINT is there in telling a nearly nude guy to put clothes on so they can pat him down?

Theatre for the fools.

26. +1000
Imagine a day when there are a couple dozen threads on the first page of GD about economic injustice that inspire as much passion and concern as TSA patdowns.

I suppose that day will happen when even more of the people here can't afford to fly anyway.

22. Happened To Me Because Of A Bulky Sweater
And that was last April, so i'm not sure this is all that new.

We were going to Key West, but it was only in the 60's in Chicago, so i had a sweater on. It was a loose fitting, bulky cotton knit. I went through the metal detector and nothing happened, but i still got pulled out of line. They didn't do anything abusive, but they made me take off my sweater and gave me a quick frisk of the upper body.

I now know to take off the sweater before i go through. I had no idea it was an issue until this happened, but this was >7 months ago.
