S.F. Zoo gets a new, sad addition
S.F. Zoo gets a new, sad addition

Call it a witness protection program for swans. Blanche, the sole surviving swan at the Palace of Fine Arts' lagoon, has been moved temporarily to the San Francisco Zoo after the recent killing of her sister, Monday.

Animal Care and Control removed Blanche due to concerns about her safety, and she likely won't be back home until January when safety improvements to the lagoon are expected to be complete. More swans could join her at that point. Blanche, 13, will undergo a veterinary check-up at the zoo.

Five-year-old Monday's body was found Nov. 13, her neck snapped and beer cans littered among her feathers. The death came six months after their mother, Friday, was stolen.

Anyone with information about the death should call Animal Care and Control at (415) 554-9400. A reward fund leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible has been set up. Contributions to the fund can be made by calling (415) 554-9413.

I am glad she is some where safe. The Palace of Fine Arts has no protection for any of the
birds there at the pond. The SF Zoo has plenty of space, and hopefully she will be happy there.

7. There seems to be a loss of sanity. We have a park here
where someone has killed swans too. While sitting on their nest. Twice that I know about. Sick. I hate people sometimes too, and only survive by knowing that all people are not like this.

8. A zoo here in Cedar Rapids
Had 50 birds killed by two men who stoned them to death. They got a $625 fine and no jail time on a guilty plea to misdemeanor livestock abuse.

http://thegazette.com/2010/09/22/marine-pleads-guilty-in-2008-duck-stoning-at-bever-park/

The thing I remember is that we went to this zoo two times. The first time before these seriously disturbed individuals did this, and the second time right after before they were caught. I can't express the rage of seeing my 10 and 12 year old daughters reading the signs explaining what happened to all the ducks. I can't imagine what it was like for the workers and volunteers to come across their handiwork the next day. It seems that such an action calls for a more severe penalty. My guess is that they could not make the case without the plea (at least that is what I hope).

13. All animal abuse seems to have no real penalty. Too bad.
I would like to stone them.

11. The bad economy may enhance the odds for someone to actually turn in the scumbags who did this.
Here's hoping that someone is really craving that reward money.....

One Last Cold Kiss
John McDermott
Mountain

Two island swans
They mated for life
And his faithful heart
Would not consider any other wife

With three years of peaceful joy
With the rushes of the pond
Proud and gentle was the love
Of the last two island swans.

There love was like a circle
With no beginning and no end
With his lady by his side
A treasure and best friend

And the pond was oh so peaceful
And the rising of the sun
Young and free as the island breeze
Their lives had just begun

Till a dark day in November
With the seering cold that starts
Stalked the hunter with his bow
And put an arrow through her heart

And the cold wind blow
He was brave but he lay low
By her body in the isle of mist
I saw her give him one last cold kiss
One last cold kiss

Now swans like people
Talk of only one in this fair side
Though they brought him 20 ladies
He would take no other bride

And they say he will not move
From the place where she did fall
Once so proud he's beaten now
And he will not rise at all

Biker's Old Lady
