Sarah Palin Gaffe: 'North Korea Is US Ally'

Adam Arnold, Sky News Online

Gaffe-prone Sarah Palin, who is considering running for the 2012 US Presidency, has risked more political ridicule after suggesting North Korea is an ally of America.

The darling of the Tea Party and conservative Republicans made the error when she was asked about the conflict between the North and Southern enemies, which escalated this week.

Speaking during a radio interview, the self-styled hockey mum said: "Obviously we've got to stand with our North Korean allies."

The interviewer Glenn Beck then pointed out that it was in fact South Korea, not Kim Jong-Il's North, which was a friend of the US.
It is not the first time her foreign policy credentials have been called into question...

Includes her other gaffes and a 56 second audio clip of her interview with Beck: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Sarah-Palin-Says-North-Korea-Is-An-Ally-Of-The-United-States-Not-Her-First-Foreign-Policy-Gaffe/Article/201011415829564?lpos=World_News_Second_Home_Page_Article_Teaser_Region_7&lid=ARTICLE_15829564_Sarah_Palin_Says_North_Korea_Is_An_Ally_Of_The_United_States,_Not_Her_First_Foreign_Policy_Gaffe

So, when she (or most likely her ghost writer) says http://www.facebook.com/notes/sarah-palin/a-thanksgiving-message-to-all-57-states/463364218434">on her FB page:

Obviously, I would have been even more impressed if the media showed some consistency on this issue. Unfortunately, it seems they couldn’t resist the temptation to turn a simple one word slip-of-the-tongue of mine into a major political headline...

...If the media had bothered to actually listen to all of my remarks on Glenn Beck’s radio show...

...The media could even have done due diligence...

...But why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

... Let’s hope that perhaps, just maybe, they might get it right next time...

She (or most likely her ghost writer) is actually using Facebook to publicly complain about her employer (News Corp.). I wonder if she's allowed to do that in her contract.

It'd be awesome if this got her fired from Faux, but somehow I doubt it would happen.

ETA something I mentioned earlier which relates to this.

I get Sky on my satellite receiver and they did a 5 minute segment earlier about this & were mocking her.

They were saying her "base" won't care because all they care about is domestic 'policies', but as far as her reputation in the rest of the country is concerned, she's going to have a very hard time living this one down, lol.

2. Definitely not the sharpest tool in the tool shed. Of course her followers
wouldn't know the difference anyway, so she probably figures what the hell, just another note for the palm.

5. You think so?
Edited on Thu Nov-25-10 11:44 PM by Turborama
You're right that if he decides she can't run, she can't run, or he could make her fail if she tries. I'm wondering what makes you think he doesn't want her to run after all the effort Faux have put in to try and recreate her image?

9. He's a mysogynist. Second, she is too unreliable. Third, I have always
thought his boy was Newt. He bought Newt years ago.

First, you build them up; then you pull them down.

11. I have to say that I just can't imagine anyone taking Gingrich seriously as a Presidential candidate

When I first heard that he had made noises about it I thought it must have been a joke.

Newt Gingrich? Seriously?

13. There is not a chance in hell that Sarah could even
qualify for law school let alone get into Harvard and graduate. Sometimes I wish there was a basic knowledge test that candidates had to pass before running for office.

15. Agree! I would like to see ALL candidates have to do this. Some in congress
don't seem to have a full grasp of what they're talking about ...

14. She 'slipped' twice - she said she wants to "sanction what it is that North Korea is going to do"
Transcript:

"Well, North Korea - this is stemming from, I think, a greater problem when we're all sitting around asking 'oh no, what are we going to do', and we're not having a lot of faith that the White House is going to come out with a strong enough policy to sanction what it is that North Korea is going to do. This speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms of our national security policy. But obviously we've got to stand with out North Korean allies - we're bound to by treaty"

"South Korea ..."

"...Er, yeah ..."

Now, 'sanction' is a tricky word.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sanction?show=1&t=1290760067

As a verb, it means to approve:
1: to make valid or binding usually by a formal procedure (as ratification)
2: to give effective or authoritative approval or consent to

So, technically, she twice put herself on North Korea's side. Perhaps she doesn't know what 'sanction' means as a verb. But in that case, she shouldn't try to use it.

16. Good catch!
I had trouble with her use of the word sanction (in fact, I had trouble with her use of words) and couldn't quite put my finger on it.

You nailed it. Ouch!
