Newark airport controversial scanners are barely used on busiest travel day

NEWARK — The choice between a "virtual strip search" and a "grope" was strictly academic Wednesday for most holiday travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

The majority of Newark’s full-body scanners were idle throughout much of the day, depriving most passengers of the chance to opt out of the controversial screening procedure even if they had wanted to.

All in all, Thanksgiving eve was a non-event at Newark Liberty, reflecting the relative calm reported at airports around the country.

1. There is a precise word for this in Mexican slang - Ñañaras
Pronounced - Nya-nya-rahs.

It translates roughly to "The pucker factor".

They obviously arent needed for security if they arent used on the busiest travel days of the year.

3. My Mom flew to Sacramento today.
She said she didn't even see any of the scanners in Milwaukee, Kansas City, Denver or Sacramento.

And she said the TSA woman was professional, courteous, and took only a few moments.

Bing bing and it was done.

Although why they were pestering a 76-year old 5 foot nothing 95 pound woman is beyond me.

7. You want an honest answer?
Protocols also come from what happens abroad... chechnya...

Of course we could use some other measures our airports refuse to use...

4. Shutting them down on the busiest travel day of the year shows they're not really there for security
Which means we need to continue beating the .gov and the TSA over the head on this.

even though DFW had scanners, they were not set up and operable. Go figure.

9. I would say the airlines trumped the security state on the busiest
day for holiday travel. What the hay, it is all security theater anyways.
