UPDATED: 6:19 am PST November 27, 2010

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. -- A dog was rescued by firefighters Friday evening after falling into a deep hole in Sacramento County.

The pooch, known as Homer, was pulled to safety along along Burch Ranch Drive, near Excelsior Road.

A Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District official said the 13-year-old dog fell into a 30-inch-wide hole that may be up to 40 feet deep.

The hole had been drilled for a sewer system.

The dog, which lives nearby and had been missing for hours, is a lab or golden retriever.

5. I was wondering the same thing.
Why wasn't it hole covered? Or if it was, they sure didn't do a very good job of it!

Rescued Dog In Bad Condition
November 27, 2010 5:48 PM

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The dog rescued by firefighters from a septic tank Friday evening is in worse condition than initially thought.

Homer, a 13-year-old Golden Retriever, can’t move his hind legs following his fall into a 30-foot septic hole on Birch Ranch Drive late Thursday night.

Sacramento Metro Fire Department crews rescued the dog by lowering a firefighter into the hole and lifting the trapped, shivering dog out of the hole.

Veterinarians plan to perform an MRI on the dog to diagnose the problem. If Homer suffered a spinal injury, the owners will have to decide whether to euthanize the dog or try surgery.

7. why was that hole left exposed?
That's what i'd like to know! A dog or a child could easily fall into it. In this case, it was a dog and he's seriously injured. This just infuriates me!!!
