DEA bans K2, other 'fake pot' products
DEA bans K2, other 'fake pot' products

WASHINGTON — The DEA used its emergency powers Wednesday to ban K2 and other "fake pot" products that mimic the effects of marijuana.

The action by the Drug Enforcement Administration makes it illegal to possess or sell the five chemicals used to make the products for at least one year. The agency and the Department of Health and Human Services will determine whether the chemicals should be permanently added to the federal list of controlled substances considered unsafe, highly abused and without medical use.

The herbal blends coated with synthetic chemicals are marketed under brands such as Spice, Red X Dawn and K2. They are usually sold as packets of incense or potpourri at convenience stores, herbal and spiritual shops and online. The packets can sell for as much as $35 an ounce and have become popular as a legal alternative to marijuana among teenagers and college students.

The chemicals are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for human consumption, the DEA said in its federal notice.

3. Same thing banning smoking in bars does - nothing. People ignore the bans
Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 06:49 PM by The Straight Story
here in Ohio there are tons of bars that allow people to smoke, especially in cold weather.

But hey - it makes a few people sitting at home (who would not go to a smoking bar anyways....) feel like they are puritans saving the souls of savages who cannot make choices themselves.

choice. It's not just about one thing, it is a concept that some of us truly stand by and others just use the phrase 'your body, your choice' when it fits their needs.

14. It gets rid of them, that's what
There are two major reasons to smoke synthetic weed: you don't have to go to the wrong part of town to get it, and it doesn't show up on a piss test for marijuana.

Since you will now have to go to the wrong part of town to get synthetic weed and you CAN set up a GC/MS profile for Spice, Spice users might as well smoke real marijuana. And since real pot is both cheaper and more fun than fake pot, that's what they'll do.

4. I've never tried it, but why not just smoke the real thing?
Az has passed the Medical Marijuana law. There will be 125 outlets in the state, as many (I believe, or more) growers, and monthly limit will be two and a half ounces. Shit! Things are beginning to shift it seems. In '68 I thought it would be legal in five years.
I don't care about K2, but now is the time to push for legalizing cannabis.

6. drug testing
alot of jobs still have random drug testing including armed service, most oil field companies, schools, etc...and at first there was no test for it altho they have already come up with one...so people could get their smoke on sort of and not have to sweat peeing dirty at probation, the job etc...and because if you get caught with the real thing the police have a problem, people smoke this stuff in clubs at concerts etc and the cops cant do shit about it because it wasnt illegal!!!

thats how the filth keeps people down, they dont like it, it doesnt fit their idea of whats right, stamp it out make it illegal!!

9. I have tried it. It's a flimsy substitute at best. BUT...
These chemicals are supposedly overlooked by current urine tests.

16. They're overlooked by a test for THC metabolites
They are not, however, overlooked by tests for this product specifically.

7. If they want to stop people from use it, why don't they re-schedule cannabis to where it belongs?
nobody would use this new designer shit if the real (and proven safe) thing were legal

11. Question: Doesn't the D in DEA stand for "Drug"? Is this stuff a drug?
If this stuff isn't a narcotic, then, how is it the DEA feels it has jurisdiction? Wouldn't it be an FDA or an ATF issue?

I'm just saying....

21. Dr. John W. Huffman
doing research for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, developed a series of chemical compounds to research how cannabinoids affect biological activity.

19. K2 is not meant to be used recreationally
Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 11:02 PM by JonLP24
the creator of K2 said so himself. One of the problems he explained was, there is no research on the long term or short term effects of this. He recommends not to use it all.

The problem with this type of ban is they will create different brands of spice as it is apperantly not that difficult to make for someone who knows what they are doing.

Here is the article I'm referring to. http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2010-08-19/news/high-science-synthetic-marijuana-is-legal-and-it-might-get-you-high-but-is-it-safe/

20. The DEA doesn't want people to know the truth - potheads can
mimic normal behavor in public! Yes, even the person siting next to you could be a POTHEAD or worse. Big Pharma and the Snake Oil trade can sell us a zillion products not approved by the FDA, but the mom and pop shop at the local gas station!? Populism!!! And you can't spell populist without the letters p o t. Think about it! Better yet, don't! :smoke:
